Published by James Hodges, at The Looking Glass, on London Bridge. 1739, First Edition of this now scarce work. 8"x5" fully calf leather bound which is gilt stamped to the borders and other than some bumping to margins is in generally good and original binding, the spine has 5 raised bands and gilt titling to red label, all of which is in good order. Some loss to top of the spine. Internally very clean and other than a contemporary ownesrhip signature to the title page and some age toning the text is in very good, tight and clean condition. vii preliminaries, pp 164. Trowell was Steward of the Inner Temple and an authority on raising tulips. This book includes 27 chapters devoted to the husbandry of many crops and is interesting as a reflection of early 18th Century farming, small-holding and gardening. Seller Inventory # 002348.…

Contemporary sheep, double gilt rules, some wear, rebacked with a green label. Originally published as "A New Treatise of Husbandry." by Trowell in 1738. Renowned for his skill in growing tulips, this enlarged edition followed his death in 1746. Ellis wrote a number of agricultural works from his farm at Little Gaddesden in Hertfordshire, although may not have followed his own advice, DNB noting that "such a sentence as 'Be yourself the first man up in a morning for sounding at your door your harvest horn to call your men at four o'clock,' contrasts amusingly with the writer's own practice, according to those who went to visit him." Trowell was well known for his skill at raising bulbous plants, notably tulips and hyacinths. A chapter on the subject is included here (pp. 114-30) in addition to others on grains, vegetables, flax, madder, saffron, hops, forest and fruit trees, herbs, shrubs, green house plants, and grape vines.
