Siamo nel 208…4 e la tecnologia ormai ha fatto passi da gigante, portando l'azienda di punta americana Eternal Mind Corporation, a fare da monopolio sull'evoluzione. Rilascia sul mercato un dispositivo: Eternal Mind Bridge. Consente di digitalizzare la psiche umana e impedire la creazione di ogni tipo di malattie legate al cervello. Nel giro di poco tempo, il mondo intero accende proteste, costringendo l'azienda e l'OMS a rendere disponibile a tutti l'EMB e non solo per scopi medici. In poche settimane, il dispositivo diventa status symbol della nuova era umana. Ma le belle notizie finiscono qui, perche subito dopo, il mondo si divide in due, a causa dell'evoluzione troppo accelerata. Nascono cosi due razze umane: i digitali, umani con un EMB, e i biologici, ovvero umani puri. Il divario crea discriminazioni gravi allo stesso livello dell'antisemitismo ai tempi del nazismo, tanto da creare una destabilizzazione mondiale quasi immediata. Salgono al potere i primi politici con un EMB ma, hanno letteralmente vita breve, sotto la pressione degli Anti Digitali. Dopo l'omicidio del sindaco di San Francisco, Ethan Parker, la citta piomba nella paura. I cittadini digitali iniziano ad abbandonare tutte le funzioni Smart dell'EMB: social, siti dedicati, tutto il superfluo, allora di moda. I social media subiscono un duro colpo, finendo per fallire e dichiarare la chiusura. Nel mentre, l'azienda pero rilascia sul mercato un'altra innovazione: un'intelligenza artificiale senziente. Questa IA, pare possedere emozioni paragonabili a quelle umane: rabbia, paura, felicita. La trasparenza dell'azienda dell'EMB pero, inizia a decadere quando uno strano virus incombe sulla citta. San Francisco viene messa in quarantena ma ben presto viene data libera uscita solo ai biologici, tanto che la cosa suscita domande e violente proteste. Queste domande ottengono risposte quando viene annunciato che il virus colpisce solo i digitali. In poco tempo migliaia di persone iniziano a svenire, sintomo immediato e fatale dell'infezione. Si viene a scoprire poi, da una fonte anonima, tramite una notizia in un'edizione speciale del telegiornale, che il virus e una versione dell'IA dell'azienda, modificata da parte di sconosciuti. Mike riceve una proposta di lavoro da parte dell'azienda fondatrice rivoluzionaria che tanto odia, ed essendo senza lavoro, accetta con disgusto. Mike viene incastrato in un reato e finisce in carcere per colpa dei colleghi che odiano dover lavorare con un biologico. Riceve poi la possibilita di avere la liberta, grazie alla cauzione di Bernard Smith, fondatore dell'Eternal Mind Corporation. Rifiuta piu volte mentre e in carcere, per poi accettare l'offerta soltanto dopo aver visto svenire e successivamente morire, sua sorella davanti ai suoi occhi, durante una visita in carcere. Inizia le indagini per conto di Bernard e si ritrova subito a ricevere l'aiuto da persone inaspettate. Capisce di essere vicino alla soluzione di tutto, quando da una fonte attendibile ed enormemente sicura, scopre la verita sull'azienda e la cruda realta che nessuno conosce. Per poter scovare il responsabile, e costretto, suo malgrado, a farsi impiantare anche lui l'odiato EMB, per essere facilitato nel muoversi tra le informazioni della rete neurale al quale si appoggia l'impianto. Il lato negativo, e che pero con questa operazione ha perso quasi tutta la sua personalita, e la sua memoria. Trova finalmente il fulcro del virus, il vero burattinaio e tutto pare essere finalmente risolto.
