The author argues that this constant scrutiny can have a profound impact on our thoughts and actions, leading us to conform to the expectations of others and to suppress our…true selves. The author provides a series of exercises and meditations designed to help readers become more aware of their own thoughts and feelings, and to live more authentically. His extant writings cover an extensive range of disciplines including logic, metaphysics and philosophy of mind, ethics, political theory, and aesthetics and rhetoric. The letter is tipped onto a slightly larger piece of card stock. Signed "Howard Douglas". There is a tiny chip to the left edge of the black border. Folded twic…e for mailing. Very good Howard Douglas writes to Colonel John St. George [1812-1891], Director of Ordnance at the War Office, asking for the return of a drawing of a gun which he wants to include in his upcoming book ["Treatise on Naval Gunnery", fifth edition revised, published in 1860]. "I am anxious for the return of the drawing which I sent to you of the Armstrong Naval Gun on its carriage. The omission would deprive my work of a good deal of interest.I have stopped the Press waiting for your reply".General Sir Howard Douglas, 3rd Baronet [1776-1861] was a British military officer, and Member of Parliament for Liverpool from 1842-1847. After entering the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, he was commissioned Second Liutenant in the Royal Artillery in 1794, becoming Lieutenant a few months later. He served as Governor of New Brunswick from 1823-31 and had to deal with the Maine boundary dispute with the United States of 1828. He also founded Fredericton College, now known as the University of New Brunswick, and was its first Chancellor. From 1835 to 1840 he was Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands where he introduced a new code of laws known as "the Douglas code". The code infuriated the Greek Orthodox patriarchate in that it included innovations affecting family life, especially marriage and divorce. Abused or abandoned women could more easily obtain a divorce. Further, it legalized marriage between step-siblings and second cousins. Douglas was the author of several important military and naval treatises, including the "Treatise on Naval Gunnery" of which the fifth edition is referred to in this letter. It became a standard text book and was the first publication to draw attention to its subject.

Add to basketFolio (200 x 300 mm). German and Latin manuscript on paper. 346 ff., of which 92 ff. are blank, pagination 1-400 and 1-32 (4 pages missing in the pagination). A varying number of lines written in a cursive script by several hands, 12 leaves bound in at the end with a separate ms. treatise on typhus. Contemporary full vellum with… ms. title and date to upper cover, traced by a later hand. A fascinating compilation of treatises written in German from 1636 onwards, beginning with astrological tables showing the influence of each planet on the hours of the day, on the days of the year, the zodiac signs and feast days (pp. 1-17); followed by several medical recipes and descriptions of the effects of herbs, quoting Aristotle, Galen, and Seneca; a section on arboriculture, and recipes added in different hands with the dates 1638 and 1646. At the end, on slightly larger paper, with the leaves folded in along the outer margin, there is a treatise in German and Latin on "morbus castrensis, febris hungarica", an illness that severely affected military encampments at various points during the 17th century, now generally identified with typhus. This appears to be a copy of a German pamphlet on the same subject ("Kurtzer und nothwendiger Underricht, die jetzt auff dem Land hin und wieder einreissende Soldaten-Sucht betreffend"), printed in Würzburg in 1689. - The book contains at least two ownership inscriptions: the first of these, included in the title-page dated 1636, is the name of "Wolff Dietterich von Halweil zu Luxburg und Ebenhoven", the second of his name, who lived between 1616 and 1695. The marriage of Hallwyl heir Anna Sibilla (1627-1701) to Johann Rudolf von Westernach zu Kronburg (1608-89) in 1640 explains how the book came to be in the library of Kronburg castle near Memmingen, the ancestral seat of Johann Rudolf's family (cf. Salzgeber), where the book was most likely rebound. The second ownership inscription, written in Latin on the front flyleaf, evidences the book's journey to Kronburg: "Joannes Carolus Baro de Westernach, Dominus in Cronburg, Ebenhoven, Luxenburg, et Ottingen". On the inside upper cover, there is the ms. ownership for the Kronburg castle library: "Ex Biblioth. Cronburg etc. Anno. MDCC. 1700". - Some marginal smudging and minor stains. The binding has been restored, and the title traced in later ink. Upper cover slightly stained and warped; otherwise in good condition. - (1) Wolf Dietrich von Hallwyl (1616-1695), of Luxburg Castle on the shores of Lake Constance: "Dem wolledlen gestrengen Wolff Dietterichen von Halweil zu Luxburg und Eberhoven gehörendt" (on title-page). (2) Johann Karl von Westernach: "Joannes Carolus Baro de Westernach, Dominus in Cronburg, Ebenhoven, Luxenburg, et Ottingen" (on front flyleaf) and "Ex Biblioth. Cronburg etc. Anno. MDCC. 1700" (inside the upper cover). - Cf. J. Salzgeber, "Aktenfund, die Luxburg bei Egnach betreffend", Thurgauische Beiträge zur vaterländischen Geschichte 123 (1986), pp. 45-49. A. F. Semm, Verzeichniß der vom XVI. Jahrhunderte an bis zur Säcularisation im Drucke veröffentlichten Medicinal (1844), p. 8.

Three minute dents to front board, a hint of wear to bands and corners, isolated faint foxing, blank recto of frontispiece leaf and blank verso of final leaf with faint blue shadown from endpapers, but all of these quite trivial, and otherwise A BEAUTIFUL COPY--fresh, clean, and bright internally, with very wide margins and strong impressions of the plates, and in a lustrous binding showing with few signs of use. This is surely one of the handsomest poetical treatises on music ever produced, and it is offered here in a binding done by one of the finest craftsmen working in Europe during the period of the book's publication. The work is written in the "silva" form of poetry used by persons of high rank, illustrated with fine engravings, and put into elegant morocco by the finest hands among the large Derome family of binders. According to Palau, our first edition is "beautiful, and printed on fine paper." He says further that, although the strongly expressed opinions of the youthful author on contemporary composers caused the work to be "unfairly attacked," it was "appreciated by professors of music and collectors of literature in that genre," especially in Italy and America. A child of the Enlightenment, Iriate (1750-91) gained entry to intellectual and artistic circles in Madrid through his uncle, who was librarian to the king of Spain. He translated works by Horace and Virgil into Spanish by royal request, and wrote criticism, poetry, and dramas. He is best known for his satirical fables on the contemporary literary scene, "Fábulas literarias." There were no fewer than 18 members of the Derome family who made their livings as binders in Paris from the middle of the 17th century until the first quarter of the 19th, but by far the most distinguished family member was Nicolas-Denis, called "le jeune" (1731-88). Known for the gracefulness of his bindings, and for being capable of "amazing delicacy" (in Hobson's words), Derome le jeune was, simply, the leading binder of the day, and his work was much in demand. Because he refused to turn away customers, Derome was forced to hire a number of assistants, whose work he could not always supervise closely. However, Thoinan says that the binder's best work is indicated by the presence of his ticket, as here. The volume's provenance adds to its luster: it was in the distinguished library of American bibliophile Mortimer Schiff (1877-1931). In Dickinson's words, Schiff, a financier and philanthropist, Schiff "brought together an unrivaled collection of decorative bindings." His library included works by great printers, important illustrated books, and works printed on vellum, but chiefly fine and historic bindings. The "Reliures" database of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France commends Schiff for assembling "one of the most important inter-war libraries," noting that his collection was "renowned for its collection of French bindings.".

Retrospective half pigskin over marbled boards, raised bands, red morocco label. Title with woodcut ornament, head- and tailpieces, many decorative initials. Printed in bl…ack letter. Front pastedown with Macclesfield bookplate for the South library; title with inscription in ink "Dulcius ex ipso fonte bibuntur aquae" ["Sweetly the waters have been drunk from the fountain itself"] and with the initials "D. Fl." (see below); a couple of contemporary annotations in ink (one slightly shaved); numerous marginal readers' marks in ink and pencil. STC 6231; ESTC S105155. Paper a shade or two less than bright, title somewhat soiled, a dark stain affecting the upper corner of ff. 24-28 (touching text but all is legible); still, an overall very good, clean copy in a pleasing new binding. This is the first appearance in English of Daneau's 1576 "Physica Christiana," the foundational work of "Mosaic physics," which attempted to reconcile the account of creation in Genesis with scientific knowledge of the natural world in order to create a "Christian natural philosophy." Though obviously theological in origin, "Christian Physics" is nevertheless substantially a work of natural history, generally adopting the Aristotelian worldview then prevalent. The first of two parts is a disquisition on creation, a long Socratic dialogue on the meaning of the opening chapters of Genesis. The second part, which occupies a good deal more than two-thirds of the volume, is a broader treatise on nature, including discussion of such things as light and shadow, meteors, the rainbow, thunder, precious stones, glass, gold, various trees, stars and planets, fish, birds, elephants, foxes, and many more topics. A Calvinist theologian forced into itinerancy because of his incautiously expressed opinions, Daneau (1530-95) produced a considerable number of books, mostly commentaries on the Bible and controversial works written against Lutherans and Catholics alike. Our copy has a couple of curious contemporary marginal annotations. On the verso of fo. 2, at the beginning of the second chapter, someone noted "Five / [s]peciall / [copie?]s of na- / [tu]rall phi- / [lo]sophye." And at the head of fo. 39 (mis-numbered 40] recto is the inscription "Sr. Walter Rawley Laureatus poeta May 4 anno reg. Eliz. 39 anno dom. 1598." There is nothing in Raleigh's biography that can account for his being mentioned as poet laureate in 1598; in that period, he was occupied in naval pursuits against the Spanish armada. It has been suggested that our copy was once owned by scholar and translator Andrew Hartwell (1553-1606), a bibliophile who sometimes used the Latin motto which appears on the title page here and who marked passages in his books with the floret-like squiggle seen here on ff. 3-12. At the same time, the "D. Fl." inscription on the title page resembles the ownership mark used by the celebrated 17th century bibliophile, antiquary politician, and magistrate Sir Daniel Fleming (1633-1701). Later, the book was securely located in the great library of the earls of Macclesfield, which was sold in 12 sales at Sotheby's (from 16 March, 2004, to 2 October, 2008) for some £22 million (at the time approximately $40 million). The library was dispersed when the 9th Earl Macclesfield, Richard Timothy George Mansfield Parker (b. 1943), who was described by the "Independent" as leading an "unconventional lifestyle," was forced to leave his 14th century Shirburn Castle after a protracted family dispute. Called by the paper "a sleeping beauty," his crenellated home had a moat, a drawbridge and, at the time of the Earl's departure, a repair bill of approximately £2.6 million. Despite the building's dilapidation, the books in the very large library were distinguished for being uniformly well preserved, were almost always in their original bindings, and were a sensation at auction for more than four years. The present work is rare: ABPC and RBH locate just one other copy at auction in the past 40 years.
