Bettersworth and new Index (pages 547-591) compiled by Mary D. Tomlin. Paged as i-vi, [2], i-xxiii, [1], 1-591. Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 15.5cm. No dust jacket (as is…sued?). Blue cloth lightly rubbed; slight bowing to front board; touch of scuffing and slight bumping at spine ends and at board corners; bright gilt stamping to front board and spine. Slight foxing to front free endpaper but interior pages are clean. Binding retains some crispness. A very good+ copy. With a frontispiece portrait of Governor Claiborne and the original edition's errata note reproduced on page 546. A meticulous researcher, J.F.H. Claiborne's landmark book remains a highly regarded examination of the early history of Mississippi inclusive to circa 1830s. Claiborne intended to publish a successive study of the state's history into the Reconstruction era but his completed manuscript was lost when the author's home burned in March 1884 and Claiborne passed away just two months later on May 17, 1884. {MS-Shelf #3} ISBN 0871522640.
