Le titre peut être traduit approximativement par "Le remède contre l'oisiveté" ou "La fuite de l'oisiveté". Le mot Fuggilozio est une création de l'auteur : fuggire (fuir) + ozio (oisiveté). L'idée est que la lecture de récits édifiants et divertissants protège des dangers moraux de l'oisiveté. L'ouvrage est construit sur le modèle du Décaméron de Giovanni Boccaccio : un groupe de nobles personnages (huit gentilshommes et deux dames) se réunit et raconte des histoires réparties sur huit journées.
