Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Based on Cretaceous-Tertiary accretionary sequences of the Shimanto Belt in Japan, the complex history of these exceptionally exposed rocks is summarized through a series of outcrop- to microscopic scale photographs, sketches, and geological maps, most of which are in full colour. This atlas broadens the base of general knowledge of the growth of continental margins, and provides both a general introduction to research in accretionary prisms as well as an education aid for students in sedimentology, structural geology and tectonics. …

Tang [and others] -- Arc-continent collision in Taiwan: New marine observations and tectonic evolution / Jacques Malavieille [and others]. Series Title: Special papers (Geological Society of America), 358. The Taiwan orogenic belt, which straddles the plate boundary between the Eurasia and Philippine Sea plates, represents one of Earth's only active arc-continent collisions; as such, it provides a unique natural laboratory for understanding orogenic processes. The 14 papers that constitute this volume are organized around five research themes, followed by a synthetic interpretation of the subduction-collision transition in southern Taiwan. The five themes are: the role of extensional structures before and during thrusting in the fold and thrust; the relation between tectonically driven uplift, river terraces, fold-and-thrust development, and global positioning system data; deformation patterns and strain compatibility in the exposed, internal parts of the orogen; the geothermal structure and the role of synorogenic extension in the internal parts of the orogen; and the integration of geologic and geophysical data sets with finite element models to understand the three-dimensional evolution of the orogen, including the subduction-collision transition. A common theme of the papers is the authors' desire to document the three-dimensional architecture of the orogen and to understand its spatial and temporal evolution using a variety of techniques. As a result, the papers provide new insights on the evolution of the orogenic belt and lay the groundwork for future studies.…

Soft cover. Condition: New. vii, 215 pages : illustrations (some colour), maps (some colour) ; 28 cm. This volume highlights the career of Dr. Gaku Kimura, professor emeritus of geosciences at the University of Tokyo, by showing the spectrum of research required to understand these dynamic environments and the range of research he has inspired. The first three chapters provide context for the growth of accretionary prisms by examining the thermal structure of the ocean crust, and the sedimentary facies and potential fluid pathways in the Shikoku Basin. Next, two chapters look at the regional-scale structure of the plate boundary and the rheology and hysteresis of the hanging wall of the subduction zone in SW Japan. The following five chapters discuss the progressive deformation and thermal maturation of sediments along accretionary margins from Japan to New Zealand to western North America. The final two chapters look at the deformation processes near the subducting plate interface with the last chapter proposing a link between outcrop-scale observations and seismic slip.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. 24 cm. xvi, 479, [1] pages. Illustrations. Appendixes. Index. DJ has slight wear. Boldly inscribed by Welch on half-title page Don Jack Welch. John Francis "Jack" Welch, Jr. (born November 19, 1935) is an American retired business executive, author, and chemical engineer. He was chairman and CEO of General Electric between 1981 and 2001. During his tenure at GE, the company's value rose 4,000%. In 2006, Welch's net worth was estimated at $720 million. When he retired from GE he received a severance payment of $417 million, the largest such payment in history. Through the 1980s, Welch sought to streamline GE. In 1981, he made a speech in New York City called "Growing fast in a slow-growth economy". Under Welch's leadership, GE increased market value from $12 billion in 1981 to $280 billion, making 600 acquisitions while shifting into emerging markets. Welch pioneered a policy of informality at the work place, allowing all employees to have a small business experience at a large corporation. Welch worked to eradicate perceived inefficiency by trimming inventories and dismantling the bureaucracy that had almost led him to leave GE in the past. He closed factories, reduced pay rolls and cut lackluster units. Welch's public philosophy was that a company should be either No. 1 or No. 2 in a particular industry, or else leave it completely. One day former General Electric CEO Reg Jones walked into Jack Welch's office and wrapped him in a bear hug. "Congratulations, Mr. Chairman", said Reg. It was a defining moment for American business. So begins the story of a self-made man and a self-described rebel who thrived in one of the most volatile and economically robust eras in U.S. history, while managing to maintain a unique leadership style. In what is the most anticipated book on business management for our time, Jack Welch surveys the landscape of his career running one of the world's largest and most successful corporations. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: It doesn't matter whether you love or hate Jack Welch. Who can resist the man telling his story? Welch discusses his childhood and his career. When he proclaims something, he gives examples to illustrate his point. For instance, he says his mother was the strongest influence on his life. He then recalls the time he threw a hockey stick across the ice in disgust after losing a game, and his mother stormed into the locker roomâ"as some teammates were changingâ"to exclaim loudly, "If you don't know how to lose, you'll never know how to win." When discussing his long career at GE, Welch is equally detailed. While some unfamiliar with the corporation may find some of the discussions somewhat hard to follow, most will be captivated by what appears to be Welch's brutal honesty. He talks about having to lobby for promotions because he didn't "fit the GE mold," and he's open about making some poor business decisions.
