Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comedy that presents a satirical view of the Royal Navy during the 17th century, mocking both its officers and sailors alike. Its plot centers around several farcical romantic entanglements, as various characters play ill-conceived pranks on one another. Through its flam…boyant characters - including a narcissistic sea captain, a sanctimonious Quaker, and a foppish lady - the author explores themes of vanity, pride, and the dangers of gossip. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First edition. xciii,[iii],373,[1]pp., (+[2]pp. ads).; vii,[i],446pp., (+[2]pp. ads.). Tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece to each volume. Titles printed in red & black. Original brown cloth, gilt lettering & decoration, t…op edge rough, others untrimmed, upper boards embossed in black with a pictorial design by Charles Ricketts. §The writer John Cowper Powys's copy with his inked name to front pastedown of each volume. Ink-crosses or marks in his hand drawing attention to four passages in 'The City of the Dreadful Night'. §Two of the three Powys brothers are known to have had an interest in Thomson. The novelist Louis Wilkinson reports that "in his undergraduate days [at Oxford]" he talked with T.F. Powys "of Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, of James Thomson . . . and Swinburne and other poets" but that "it was Nietzsche who then most attracted Theodore who bore a striking resemblance to one portrait of that destructive and creative philosopher" ('Some Memories of T.F. Powys', ed. Sewell, 1964, pp.10-11); Llewelyn Powys's collection 'Cup-Bearers of Wine and Hellebore', 1924, includes an 11 page essay on 'B.V.'; John Cowper Powys's interest in the 'pessimist poet', however, is perhaps unrecorded (a fairly tantalising pairing). Free endpapers browned, ownership signatures offset. Prelims., portraits & tissue-guards slightly foxed. A few leaves carelessly opened (see illustration of vol. I, p. 246, for the most serious example). Some marking to covers, Ricketts designs a little rubbed. Spines severely faded, obliterating gilt lettering & blocking, spine ends chafed & worn. In all other respects a good, sound set. (**PLEASE READ CAREFULLY** - Heavy/overweight item weighing 1.4 kg packed, therefore additional postage will be required for overseas orders. International customers, please ask for a prior shipping quotation). Charles Ricketts (illustrator). Inscribed by Author(s).

Add to basketHardback. Condition: Good. The two Thomson classics bound in one volume, with this edition published during the height of romanticism. The Seasons and The Castle of Indolence, written by esteemed Scottish poet James Thomson, to which is prefixed The Life of the Author by his friend and fellow writer Patrick Murdoch. Printed by T…. Davison in 1826, first published between 1726-1730 and 1748 respectively. In the publisher's original paper boards. Contains a frontispiece and title vignette illustrated by Thomas Uwins and engraved by Charles Turner Warren. Despite The Seasons being written in Milton's narrative verse while The Castle of Indolence being written in Spenserian verse, both these Thomson classics commented on the beauty of nature and the countryside over that of industry. This particular edition was published at the height of romanticism, of which Thomson was foundational in Britain. In the publisher's original paper boards. Externally, browning to boards and spine, with a couple of heavy marks to the rear board. Fading to boards and spine. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, with small chips to head and tail of spine. Rubbing to joints and edges, with creases to spine and extremities. Slight spotting to end papers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and mostly clean, with a couple of spots to final leaves, and slight offsetting to frontispiece and vignette. Good.
