Hardcover. Condition: Good. * CONDITION : Used - Good * OTHER: The boards are reasonably clean with some bumping and scuffing to the edges and corners. The spine is worn with faded gilt patterns. The binding is reasonably firm. The pages are clean with some tanning and the foxing. There is a dedication penned on the ffep dated 1882. This book has 288 pages. All in all a nice example of this book.

Full-Leather. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Beautifully bound in a 19th century leather binding with a tooled gilt device on the front and gilt floral decoration on the spine. Gilt edges to the entire text block. Bit of foxing here and there. All illustrations, map and tissue guard are intact.

Westley in original green morocco with borders blocked in blind, gilt blocking and lettering to spine, with full gilt edges. (Slight rubbing to corners and spine). A very good copy. Bookbinder plate on back endpaper of F. Westley of Friar Street.

Hardcover. Cruikshank engravings (illustrator). pp. 454, 448. 12mo. Lovely two volume set bound in full tan polished calf. This is a complete set in itself, issued as part of 'The Novelist's Library', edited by Thomas Roscoe, and with illustrations by George Cruikshank. Titles from the set are usually encountered bound in cloth: our offering is most attractively bound in full polished calf, with a heavily-ornamented spine showing five raised bands and morocco spine labels. A frontispiece and four engravings in volume I; and a frontispiece and three engravings in volume II. All edges are marbled, as are the endpapers. The binding shows minimal wear, and the hinges are strong. Occasional foxing to text, more so from off-setting of the plates. Else in very good condition. Roscoe (1791-1871) was an English author and translator. He was educated by Dr. W. Shepherd and a private tutor, and began his career writing for local magazines and journals. During the period 1820 to 1850, he wrote a number of travel books, and several novels. He also translated into English many Italian, German and French works. 'The Novelist's Library' was issued between 1831 and 1833, and contained complete works (in English) by Cervantes, Tobias Smollett, Laurence Sterne, Oliver Goldsmith, Henry Fielding, and Daniel De Foe.

Volume 2 only (of 3); Text in English & French; 1/4 leather & brown cloth over boards, gilt spine title & decoration, covers have decorative blind embossing with gilt armorial devices, all edges gilt, & 46 tissued plates; A just good copy with uneven foxing (affecting half of plates), rebacked with old spine neatly laid on despite loss at heel, new endpapers/pastedown, & ink owner name/place/date (1840) on old fep, & newspaper clipped poem tipped onto same; 92 pages. 19 volumes, crown 8vo (approx. 6½" x 4"), later half brown morocco over marbled paper-covered boards by Briggs & Wauld, t.e.g.; lightly scuffed, one gathering in Tom Jones sprung; all else very good and sound. Seventeen volumes were "illustrated by George Cruikshank, and in these there are all together seventy-four etchings by him. The first two volumes, "Robinson Crusoe," were not illustrated by G. Cruikshank, whose services were obtained in the endeavour to make the series a success" (Cohen, p. 196). But clearly, in this set, Robinson Crusoe is a replacement edition, as published by John Major, with 2 engraved frontispieces and 37 wood engravings in the text by Cruikshank, thereby making this set entirely illustrated by Cruikshank. They kept alive my fancy, and my hope of something beyond that place and time.".
