Illustrated with 186 plates of line drawings, thick octavo, pp xii, 384, a little age-toned throughout, otherwise very clean and sound throughout, green cloth, decorated in gilt on the upper cover, very slightly worn, the spine faded and verys lightly worn at head and tail. [From the libra…ry of Arthur Hugh Garfit Alston, with his bequest label on the front endpaper and (almost certainly) his small pencil signature. Alston was a British botanist specialising in pteridology. He was born in the village of West Ashby, Lincolnshire. His father, a vicar, was an amateur naturalist and inspired his son to take an interest in insects and plants. He went on to study botany at Oxford, graduating in 1924, after which he spent several months working in the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He then spent a number of years as a systematic botanist for the colonial Department of Agriculture in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) before he was recruited to the botany department of the British Museum (Natural History) in 1930, as Assistant Keeper of the Herbarium. Here he took charge of the Pteridophyta and became a particular authority on the moss-like genus Selaginella. Despite his specialisation, he maintained an interest in all kinds of botany, authoring works on subjects as diverse as grains found in excavations of Iron Age villages and on the emetic plant famously used in ceremonies by American Indians, Ilex vomitoria (co-authored with Richard Schultes). Alston edited the British Fern Gazette from 1937-1949 and completed a wealth of publications in his lifetime, his final work being The Ferns and Fern Allies of West Tropical Africa (1959).].

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Sm. folio. Portrait, plates, map. An impressive volume and a very useful handbook. A monument to Sim's industry and must have entailed a very great amount of work. The difficulties confronting Sim were therefore considerable, as they mostly are in pioneer work, and in th…e preparation of the work, the forests themselves, with their living trees, were preferred as sources of information. Sim's pioneer work is still highly regarded, and wrote with clarity, minute attention to detail and an eye for the picturesque. It remains the great classic on forest trees and is the basis of much that has since been written on the subject. It is extremely scarce and copies very seldom occur for sale. The boards are shelf rubbed and edge worn, with the corners frayed, but they remain strong and sturdy despite this. Internally, there is age-related marking and wear throughout, but the pages are neat, legible and complete. Tightly bound and in very good condition considering the age of the book. JK.
