"He wrote a large number of books . His chief interests were the tariff, the theory of money, and the currency question, and taxation. . He, more than others, was the expositor of the nature and consequences of the 'machine age'. . Some of his most effective writing was in opposition to fiat money or depreciated monetary standards. An excellent example of his work in this field is his 'Robinson Crusoe's Money'." [DAB] A bit uncommon in original wrappers. Wear & soiling to wrappers. 1 cm paper loss at spine ends. Duodecimo size, 299 pp. The popular work of ironic fiction written by journalist and political commentator David Ross Locke (1833-1888). Locke's greatest influence was through his satirical writings as "Petroleum Vesuvius Nasby". The Nasby letters harshly ridiculed the plight of peoples in the Confederate states and the complicity of Northern politicians. Both Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant recognized Nasby as a significant source of support for their presidencies. Thomas Nast (1840-1902) eventually heightened the work with his illustrations, and was also credited by Lincoln for inspiring people to support the war effort. His work marked an important shift in shift in political cartoons, which had before relied mainly on text rather than imagery. "Swinging Round the Cirkle" is made up of some of the most weighted of Nasby's moral statements, especially concerning the plight of African Americans. Pullen's satirical take on the Franco-Prussian War, casting European countries as schoolchildren was first published in 1870 in London without illustrations. Old paper-tape at spine fold beginning to loosen revealing the original threads from sewing. Few loose pages, covers tanned, and corners chipped. Exceedingly scarce in the original paperwraps. Half brown leather over brown pebbled cloth, gilt ruled and lettered spine with elaborate stamped panels and raised bands, gilt edges, b/w plates with tissue guards, color fold-out map of Palestine. Moderate wear to covers and edges, dampstain to frontispiece, clean and soud otherwise with sturdy binding. 'This analysis was first prepared by 'a wealthy currier of England,' Matthew Talbot, and published about 1800. The material was arranged by subject in thirty Books divided into chapters and sections, giving every verse in the Bible but once. The two indexes (one really a table of contents, the other alphabetical) were inadequate. A plagiarized edition was published in 1848 by an Englishman named Whowell as Analogy of the Old and New Testament Systematically Classified. In 1853 came Nathaniel West's revision of Talbot's work, in which there was little change except that West included twelve verses that Talbot had inadvertently omitted (making a total of 31,173) and added a Consulting Apparatus of nine tables and indexes ? a great labor but of considerable practical value. A. J. Johnson bought the plates of the 1853 West edition from Scribner & Co. and asked Fred B. Perkins to see what they needed for improvement. He found many typographical errors, and recommended a revision in view of more recent scholarship. The old plates were then scrapped and the Rev. Roswell D. Hitchcock of Union Theological Seminary, New York, was employed to undertake a thorough revision. The work was completely recast, the Books reduced from thirty to twenty-seven, new indexes were provided, and Cruden's Concordance, newly set, was added. Mr. Perkins and the Rev. George W. Sheldon, of Union Theological, also aided in the work. As copy they used the recent text of the American Bible Society. In regard to the accuracy of that text, Mr. Perkins stated that he could find but one typographical error and that was a 'somewhat doubtful case of 'wrong font.'' More 'historical methods' were employed in this analysis, the division into chapters was by 'thoughts' rather than by verses, and cross references were used. The indexes and tables were reduced to four.' (Margaret Hills, The Bible In America, ?1868).

Josh Billings was the pseudonym of American humorist Henry Wheeler Shaw (1818-1885), "whose philosophical comments in plain language were widely popular after the American Civil War through his newspaper pieces, books, and comic lectures. He employed the misspellings, fractured grammar, and hopeless logic then current among comic writers who assumed the role of cracker-barrel philosophers. His special contributions were his rustic aphorisms.and his droll delineations of animal life (Britannica). This volume includes the first printing in book form of Mark Twain's letter poking fun at Billings' use of phonetic spelling (see p. 573). BAL 17455.
