Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an array of theological and philosophical essays delivered as lectures and addresses by Methodist minister Thomas Guard in the late 19th century. These lectures reflect the intellectual and spiritual currents of the Victorian era, exploring the relationship between Christianity and various aspects of 19th century life. Guard discusses the compatibility of Christianity with the intellectual advancements of his time, the role of reason and faith in religious belief, and the influence of Christianity on the moral and intellectual development of society. The lectures offer insights into the complexities of Victorian-era religious thought and the author's nuanced understanding of Christianity's place within it. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

L. Burt about 1890 - 1900. This book is in FINE- condition - - in a very good dust wrapper as issued. There is virtually no wear showing to the maroon-cloth covers with gilt lettering on the spine - - with the gilt -as new- and with the top edges also gilt. The binding and corners are square with again no damage or time-wear showing. The text block is again fine with no markings or damage showing and only the end-papers front and back showing some touch of offset to the gluing of the endpapers. The book shows 369 text pages and then four additional un-numbered pages listing Burt's Home Library titles - - price $1.25. The dust wrapper does show real time-wear - - with wear at the folds, several chips missing at the spine extremities, one half-inch closed tear to the bottom edge, and a sun-faded spine - - but all in all the jacket is solid and now protected by a mylar cover. 369 pages.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Simple Cobler of Aggawam in America. Willing to help 'mend his Native Country, lamentably tattered, both in the upper-Leather and sole, with all the honest stitches he can take. And as willing never to bee paid for his work by Old English wonted to pay. It is his trade to patch all the year long, gratis. Therefore I pray Gentlemen keep your purses. London. Printed by J.D. & R.I. for Stephen Bowtell, at the signe of the Bible in Pope's Head Alley. 1647. This is the first edition of Nathaniel Ward's remarkable and early book. Ward was a Puritan clergyman, author most notably of The Body of Liberties, which was the first code of laws written for the colonies. The Simple Cobler was written a few years later and was published in Englan under the pseudonym Thomas de la Guard. It is considered perhaps the best literary effort to come from the new colonies in the seventeenth century -- a notoriously short list. Measures 5.75 x 7.5. Bound with leather spine and corners, marbled papers over boards. A nineteenth century binding. Gold lettering on the spine in the English manner (bottom to top). There are notes and underlined passages and pointing hands drawn in the margins on a great many pages - done quite a long time ago, but I cannot tell if the marginalia is seventeenth century or eighteenth century or even nineteenth century. Endpapers are more recent. The book has undergone a very expert restoration including the following: new endpapers, repair to bottom corner of the title page (missing text supplied in facsimile), dedication page supplied in facsimile as well as pages 3-10 and 73-80. In all, there are 80 pages and 15 of them are facsimile pages. The other 65 pages, including the title page, are originals from 1647. It also appears that the original pages have been repaired at the folds, and then resewn, to rebuild the book to its current, very well preserved, condition. The extent of the restoration is well beyond the norm, and must certainly have cost a considerable amount - but the end result, fitted back into the nineteenth century binding - is very satisfying indeed. This first edition copy, though incomplete, is very scarce.
