Softcover. Condition: gut. 1998. The "user illusion" of this groundbreaking book's title comes from the computer industry and refers to the simplistic mental image most of us have of our PCs. "The User Illusion" makes the case that humans are designed for a much richer existence than processing small bits of information from a c…omputer screen. Line drawings. As John Casti wrote, "Finally, a book that really does explain consciousness." This groundbreaking work by Denmark's leading science writer draws on psychology, evolutionary biology, information theory, and other disciplines to argue its revolutionary point: that consciousness represents only an infinitesimal fraction of our ability to process information. Although we are unaware of it, our brains sift through and discard billions of pieces of data in order to allow us to understand the world around us. In fact, most of what we call thought is actually the unconscious discarding of information. What our consciousness rejects constitutes the most valuable part of ourselves, the "Me" that the "I" draws on for most of our actions -- fluent speech, riding a bicycle, anything involving expertise. No wonder that, in this age of information, so many of us feel empty and dissatisfied. As engaging as it is insightful, this important book encourages us to rely more on what our instincts and our senses tell us so that we can better appreciate the richness of human life. A rare survival: a square-format, First Edition hardback from 1937 which, creates the novelty of illusion of movement (Patented), through a 'flicker' action, for four boxing techniques e.g. Left lead to chin; parrying left counter; bringing over right to jaw and lending le…ft to the body. Six Chapters of accompanying text. Of its time, the book is aimed at boys and young men - not for fame and fortune but for playing the game for the game's sake and putting fair play and sportsmanship first. Red linen boards (just very minor wear to corner [points) with black titling, perfectly clean throughout with no inscription. A York bookseller's label. 20% price reduction applied. Uniquely illustrated throughout with 4 boxing "flicker" movement sequences [where the reader/viewer splays or fans the pages to create the illusion of moving pictures] (illustrator).

Contact seller5-star sellerA cabinet card photograph of Ajeeb, the famous nineteenth-century chess-playing automaton. The image corresponds to the known 1886 photograph of "Ajeeb the Wonderful" associated with the Eden Musée in New York. Ajeeb was created by English cabinetmaker Charles Hooper and first exhibited in London in 1868. By the 1880s it had bee…n brought to the United States, where it became a popular attraction at the Eden Musée and later at Coney Island. Like the earlier Mechanical Turk, Ajeeb was presented as a mechanical chess player, but in fact concealed a human operator. The exposed chest panel and opened cabinet doors were part of the display, intended to preserve the illusion by showing Ajeeb's apparent machinery. Period accounts described Ajeeb as a Moorish figure seated on a cushion, with open cabinet compartments, a chessboard before it, and a mechanism that moved pieces against living opponents. This example is mounted by Eastman of Portland, Oregon. We have not found evidence that Ajeeb was exhibited in Portland, and the card may instead be a Portland-issued or locally mounted copy of the well-known Ajeeb photograph. Either way, it is a strong cabinet card image of one of the best-known nineteenth-century automaton illusions, with interest for chess, stage magic, mechanical entertainment, photography, and the prehistory of artificial intelligence. . Light wear, toning, and soiling; very good. Cabinet card photograph with scalloped edges, measuring approximately 4 ¼ x 6 ½ inches. Photograph shows the chess-playing automaton Ajeeb seated in robe and headdress before a chessboard, with the chest panel and lower cabinet doors open to display apparent mechanical workings. Photographer?s mount reads ?Eastman,? with Portland and East Portland addresses.
