Hardcover. Condition: New. When this work was first conceived in the late 1900, there existed a wide gap in the numismatic literature of the ancient Indian period. Because das abo happens to be by far the commonest series of punchmarked coins, the catalogue will serve to identify most of the specimens available to collectors and students The basis of this work is the unpublished PhD thesis of Dr. Parmeshwarilal Gupta (1957), which for the first time listed all the then known varieties in this series of coins. This was supplemented in 1963 by his work on the Amaravati board of silver punchmarked coins. The present Catalogue is an updated version of these works is which Hardaker has redrawn all the symbols, subdivided and extended the sis original "periods", and adopted a new system of numbering The new varieties which have appeared since 1963 have also been incorporated. The Catalogue and the test represent the joint views of both authors Since our work began, many of the punchmarked coins covered here have been photographically recorded in works by Michael Mitchiner. In his book The Ancient and Classical World, the same symbol drawings and numbering system have been used as in the present work. Punchmarked coins are still on the frontier of numismatic research. In this situation a catalogue cannot be declared complete, as new varieties are likely to appear subsequently. The method of cataloguing employed here allows for new varieties to take their place without upsetting the general classification, thus hopefully prolonging the useful life of this as a reference work. This study of Palaeolithic Africa, an interim report, describes a large number of sites in the region of the Zebra River, Western Namibia. After the Introductory Sections, a complete list of all sites is given in Section 4, presenting the raw informationgathered in the fieldwork. The interpretation of these data is then discussed on a site-by-site basis in Section 5. Here, specific topics which relate to more than one site are considered when they first arise, while other more general topics are discussed subsequently under separate headings. Cross-references are liberally provided in the text. Finally Section 6 draws the threads together and offers a wider comment on the way forward for surface studies for earlier Palaeolithic archaeology. Artefacts deemed worthy of further study, which were usually photographed, measured and given GPS locations, were given sequential numbers and are fully listed in Appendix 1. A summary table of artefacts for each major site collected or recorded during fieldwork is given in Section 4, including a table of the ‘numbered’ artefacts, by type, to which other recorded artefacts are sometimes added, as noted in the individual tables. The long-awaited second edition of this Catalogue of Indian punchmarked coins GH as it has become known - is at last available, twenty-nine years after its first publication. It introduces the new data and types accumulated over this period.Nearly three times the length of the first edition, the book has been extensively rewritten by the surviving author (Hardaker) and is superbly printed with clear photographs including three colour maps. Whereas the original volume catalogued 613 types, this edition includes 1043 and expands the original seven Series to nine. These now include the pre-karshapana coinages of the early Magadhan state as Series 0 , and the post-Mauryan karshapana-like coinages as Series VIII .Many improvements have been made. The Catalogue section (132pp) includes photos next to the symbol drawings. The task of identification is made easier with extensive symbol lists, guidance on rarity, and a critical path chart, as well as a 35-page section of enlarged photos. Users of the first edition will be glad to see that the old type numbers are retained, new types being added by way of a , b , etc.The first two Introductory sections (57pp) provide some exciting insights into Magadha-Mauryan coinage resulting from ongoing study since the 1980s. The narrative is set into the wider context of late Iron Age society. The bankers and other additional marks seen on these coins are for the first time classified into chronological phases, and the way these marks can be used to reconstruct the economic and social history of the period is described. Recent research, including much fresh hoard evidence, is evaluated in the discussions on chronology and date, and the most likely options are laid out. Especially interesting is the progress that has been made in the chronology of the Series I coins which now total 505 types.The text demonstrates how close-focus study of coinage can expose specific moments in time, such as a mint workman s catastrophic error (pictured above), while also illuminating the broader thinking underlying society in an age on the cusp of historic time. The coins show financial dealers battling with iron-fisted state control, engravers improving their skills in fulfilling complex design directives, and finally the collapse of society at the end of the Mauryan period.This will remain the standard reference work on the karshapana series for many years to come.…
