Suzanne Dracius tells the story of Rehvana, a woman who feels she is too black to fit in when living in mainland France, yet at the same time not dark-skinned enough to feel truly accepted in the Caribbean. Her sense of dislocation manifests itself at first in a turn to a mythical idea of Mother Africa; later, she moves to Martinique with a new boyfriend and thinks she may have finally found her place but instead she is soon pregnant, isolated, and lonely. Soon her only reliable companion is her neighbor, Ma Cidalise, who regales her in Creole with supernatural tales of wizards. Rehvana, meanwhile, watches her dream of belonging fade, as she continues to refuse to accept her multicultural heritage.

Illustrated paper covers have light bumping and creasing to edges and corners and light overall scuffing. Binding tight (staple bound). Previous owner's name in ink at the top of page 5, Otherwise, pages are clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. Color illustrations. This richly illustrated book explores the history and environment of the Anse Latouche Estate, one of Martinique's oldest plantations, established in 1643. Originally developed by Captain Latouche, the estate expanded to a include a sugar mill, distillery, indigo plant, and manioc factory, cultivating sugar cane, cocoa, coffee, and tobacco. The estate was devastated by the eruption of Mount Pelee in 1902, leaving behind extensive ruins. These remnants have since been transformed into the Martinique Zoo and a botanical garden, preserving the plantation's history within a lush tropical setting. The book details the estate's past, including its colonial history, industrial archaeology, and connection to Paul Gauguin, who lived there in 1887. It also highlights the estate's transformation into Butterfly Valley, featuring a butterfly conservatory and an extensive botanical garden. Various butterfly species are documented, including members of the Danaidae, Heliconidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Hesperidae, Pieridae, and the notable Morpho peleides.
