The estate was devastated by the eruption of Mount Pelee in 1902, leaving behind extensive ruins. These remnants have since been transformed into the Martinique Zoo and a botanical garden, preserving the plantation's history within a lush tropical setting. The book details the estate's past, including its colonial history, industrial archaeology, and connection to Paul Gauguin, who lived there in 1887. It also highlights the estate's transformation into Butterfly Valley, featuring a butterfly conservatory and an extensive botanical garden. Various butterfly species are documented, including members of the Danaidae, Heliconidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Hesperidae, Pieridae, and the notable Morpho peleides.
