Sowohl meine Schüler wie auch ich selbst hatten von diesen Diskussionen einen außerordentlichen Ge winn. Wir empfingen aus diesen Gesprächen so viele Anregungen, daß in mir der Wunsch entstand, den Inhalt dieser Gespräche festzuhalten und anderen Chemikern, die sich mit der Synthese, mit dem Verhalten und der Struktur von anorganischen kovalenten Stoffen befassen, zugänglich zu machen. In dem vorliegenden Buch finden sich nun diese Vorstellun gen, über die Dr. SUTTON zu uns gesprochen hat. Der Entstehungsge schichte nach ist das Buch kein Lehrbuch, ja nicht einmal eine abge schlossene Darstellung über das, was wir heute über Molekülstruktur und chemische Bindung wissen. Es gibt lediglich moderne Gedanken zu diesen Fragen wieder - Gedanken aber, deren Kenntnis für den Anorganiker förderlich und wichtig ist. Diese Gedanken sind mit all ihrer Problematik und Unvollständigkeit dargestellt worden; außerdem ist versucht wor den, möglichst anschauliche Bilder zu benutzen, die für den Chemiker vielfach hilfreicher sind als exakte mathematische Formulierungen. Das Gedankengut kann im Laboratorium, wie ich glaube, dann fruchtbar werden, wenn man sich durch ein besinnliches Studium mit der Proble matik der angeschnittenen Fragen vertraut macht.
