Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This groundbreaking book, written by an anonymous author, is a detailed and comprehensive account of the design, construction, and operation of the world's first mechanical tunnel boring system. Published in 1863, this book stands as a testament to the technological advancements of the 19th century, offering invaluable insights into the origins of mechanized tunneling. This book goes beyond the technical aspects of the project, delving deep into the challenges faced by engineers as they sought to overcome the limitations of manual labor and the hazards of underground mining. It captures the determination and ingenuity of the project's pioneers, who pushed the boundaries of engineering knowledge and set the stage for future advancements in tunneling technology. Moreover, the book serves as a chronicle of the social and economic climate of the time, highlighting the role of infrastructure projects in fostering industrial growth and connecting remote regions. Through its lucid descriptions and detailed illustrations, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of engineering, innovation, and human endeavor. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Boards show gentle shelfwear. Published without a dust jacket. -- The problem of classifying the finite dimensional simple Lie algebras over fields of characteristic p > 0 is a long standing one. Work on this question has been directed by the Kostrikin Shafarevich Conjecture of 1966, which states that over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 5 a finite dimensional restricted simple Lie algebra is classical or of Cartan type. This conjecture was proved for p > 7 by Block and Wilson in 1988. The generalization of the Kostrikin-Shafarevich Conjecture for the general case of not necessarily restricted Lie algebras and p > 7 was announced in 1991 by Strade and Wilson and eventually proved by Strade in 1998. The final Block-Wilson-Strade-Premet Classification Theorem is a landmark result of modern mathematics and can be formulated as follows: Every simple finite dimensional simple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 3 is of classical, Cartan, or Melikian type. -- This is the second part of a three-volume book about the classification of the simple Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic > 3. The first volume contains the methods, examples and a first classification result. This second volume presents insight in the structure of tori of Hamiltonian and Melikian algebras. Based on sandwich element methods due to A. I. Kostrikin and A. A. Premet and the investigations of filtered and graded Lie algebras, a complete proof for the classification of absolute toral rank 2 simple Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic > 3 is given. -- Contents: Tori in Hamiltonian and Melikian algebras; 1-sections; Sandwich elements and rigid tori; Towards graded algebras; The toral rank 2 case; Supplements to Volume 1; Notations; Bibliography; Index.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Nothing dramatic is happening.Nothing is obviously wrong. And yet you are less patient than you used to be. More irritable. Less generous in how you interpret people and situations. Small frictions feel heavier. Delays feel personal. Your judgment feels sharper but also narrower. This book explains why.Emotional Overdraft introduces a simple but overlooked idea. Emotional capacity operates like a finite system. When it is drawn down continuously by low grade activation, it does not collapse. It quietly changes how you think, feel, and decide. This is not burnout. It is what happens long before burnout.Callum Strade shows how modern environments keep emotional systems slightly activated all day. Not through crisis or anxiety, but through constant readiness, mild urgency, and background vigilance. Over time, this produces emotional overdraft. Patience thins. Interpretation narrows. Judgment degrades, even when nothing seems wrong. This book is not therapy. It does not ask you to explore feelings or slow your life down.It explains why relief does not restore capacity, why self control fails under load, and why people often become more rigid and less generous precisely when they believe they are being rational.Written for capable adults who feel subtly worse than they used to, Emotional Overdraft offers clarity without diagnosis and explanation without comfort. If you have ever thought, "I am fine, but I am not as patient or fair as I once was," this book explains why.
