The malacologist Pieter Kaas (born on 14 November 1915) died on 8 June 1996. Kaas is best known for his numerous publications on worldwide Polyplacophora, covering the period 1952 to date, particularly the monograph jointly authored by Kaas & Van Belle, of which five volumes were published to date. He also wrote an authorative volume on the Dutch marine molluscs (1942, co-author A.N.Ch. ten Broek). Most of the beautiful and scientifically correct drawings were done by himself. Kaas earned a living as a successful author of children's books and later as biology teacher in a secondary school. The obituary below describes his life and work and concludes with a malacological bibliography and a list of the 100 new taxa and 4 new names proposed by Kaas (42 together with R.A. Van Belle and 2 with H.L. Strack). 9 pp., 1 fig., gr. 8.

Revision of the Recent Polyplacorphora of the Netherlands Investigations by the author have demonstrated that the Dutch Polyplacophora consist of five species of which only two are autochthonous: Leptochiton asellus (Gmelin, 1791) and Lepidochitona cinerea (Linnaeus, 1767). The three others are adventitious: Ischnochiton (Stenosemus) albus (Linnaeus, 1767), Acanthochitona fascicularis (Linnaeus, 1767) and Acanthochitona crinita (Pennant, 1777). Leptochiton cancellatus (Sowerby, 1840) and Tonicella marmorea (Fabricius, 1780) are to be removed from the Dutch list. The only autochthonous record of I. albus from Zwarte Polder (Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen), proved to be based on a white specimen of L. cinerea. The changing distribution of L. cinerea in the Netherlands is depicted in figs. 6-7. The constantly changing pattern of this common species in the southwestern parts of the Netherlands (fig. 6: triangles the species is extinct here; squares the species cannot survive here in the future) is caused by the so-called 'Delta Plan', a large scale system of construction of dikes, reclamation of land and establishment of freshwater lakes in an overall attempt to improve the protection against direct influence of the sea. 8 pp., 7 figs, gr. 8.

Studying the type material of the chitons of New Caledonia described by St.-M. Souverbie in 1866 and kept in the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Bordeaux revealed the following results: Chiton insculptus Souverbie, 1866 = Tonicia (Lucilina) lamellosa (Quoy & Gaimard, 1835); Chiton obscurellus Souverbie, 1866 = Plaxiphora obscurella (Souverbie, 1866); Chiton tuberculosus Souverbie, 1866 = Chiton (Rhyssoplax) discolor Souverbie, 1866; Chiton discolor Souverbie, 1866 = Chiton (Rhyssoplax) discolor Souverbie, 1866; Chiton subassimilis Souverbie, 1866 = Chiton (Rhyssoplax) subassimilis Souverbie, 1866. A lectotype has been designated for C. discolor Souverbie, 1866 as well as for T. lamellosa (Quoy & Gaimard, 1835) (Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris). 6 pp., 5 figs, gr. 8.

A small collection of chitons from South Africa was studied. Apart from new records of some rare species and bathymetrical range extensions for several of the more common species, the collection contained an undescribed Lepidozona species, L. debruni n. sp. The genus Lepidozona is most speciose in the northern Pacific. The present new species is the first record for the coast of the African continent and the second Lepidozona species known exclusively from the Southern Hemisphere.
