VOLUME I ONLY of a two volume set. Poor condition. i-xvi, 1-493, [1], 497-503 pages. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 15.25cm. Contemporary dark brown cloth worn along edges particularly at corners; spine's surface cloth entirely perished (so no title lettering) with underlying paper back-strip exposed lengthwise as are quire tips at ends; front board with ffep and ffly only tenuously attached to text block. Foxing throughout but heaviest on early leaves which also have some moisture stains; past owner's pencil signature at title page's top right. Slight splitting to text block between pages 32-321 but otherwise binding is holding. Book needs to be re-backed and restitched and sold as is. Book now presented in a clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the aforementioned loose front board. Pagination gap at book's rear matches Wright Howes notation in U.S.IANA - i.e. no missing leaf. With five illustrations: b/w frontispiece portrait "Genl. Oglethorpe," b/w plate "Fort Caroline" (opposite page 34), toned b/w foldout "A View of the Town and Castle of St. Augustine" (opposite page 174), b/w plate "St. Simons Isld."
