Frente a esta idílica proyección, este libro nos aporta otra visión de la misma realidad, en la que la religión popular se transforma en una fuente de heterodoxia, en tensión constante con los cultos oficiales, donde el aspecto militar y la jerarquía de mando es fundamental; la armonía debe restaurarse cíclicamente mediante una serie de ritos de exorcismo donde demonios y dioses se confunden. El ciclo festivo de un pequeño pueblo de Taiwan sirve de guía para abordar los aspectos de la religión popular china menos conocidos: las procesiones de los cultos territoriales, el año nuevo y la fiesta de los faroles, los cotidianos ritos de adivinación para acabar con la incertidumbre, y los ritos extraordinarios de exorcismo. Desde el recurso a la geomancia para la construcción de una casa hasta las celebraciones de las asociaciones de paisanos en torno a un brasero de incienso y los banquetes festivos, nada pasa desapercibido al autor. Especialmente interesante es su análisis del dinero quemado en honor a los espíritus. Pero además, los cultos populares también son un modo de organización social y territorial, donde intervienen relaciones económicas y políticas.
