The Reductions serve as a case study in imagining the noble savage as a symbol of Christian utopia and a challenge to feudal structures. The second part, "Reality, Myth, and Allegory in the Eighteenth Century," turns to literary and philosophical reimaginings. Through texts such as Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, and works by Prévost, Montesquieu, and Vico, Cro shows how the figure evolved into a vehicle for political and moral critique. The noble savage becomes a point where law, anthropology, and allegory converge. Central is Rousseau, who reconceptualizes the noble savage not as an empirical figure but as a referential allegory - an abstract construct used to challenge European political and moral frameworks.
