Nach dem zweiten Staatsexamen war er zunächst als Lehrkraft, später als Seminarleiter in den Studienseminaren Wolfenbüttel für das Lehramt Sonderpädagogik und Helmstedt für das Lehramt an Grundschulen beschäftigt. Zwischen 2005 und 2010 war er zuletzt als Akademischer Rat an der Leibniz Universität Hannover tätig und leitete dort das Forschungsnetzwerk Frühkindliche Bildung und Entwicklung. Als Gastprofessor der Freien Universität Bozen/Italien lehrt er seit 2009 im Studiengang Bildungswissenschaften für den Primarbereich, Zusatzausbildung zur Befähigung für den Integrationsunterricht in Kindergarten und Grundschule. Seine Schwerpunkte in Lehre und Forschung liegen in den Bereichen Inklusion in Kindertageseinrichtungen und Grundschulen, Spracherwerb und Sprachliche Bildung bzw. alltagsintegrierte Sprachförderung (Fachkraft-Kind-Interaktion, Peerinteraktion, kommunikative Strategien von Kindern mit geringen Sprachkenntnissen im Deutschen), sowie der interdisziplinären Frühförderung.
