Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. At the start of the Menji Era, Japan emerged from its years of self-imposed isolation and quickly modernised. Part of this modernisation was the construction of the railways the first of which opened between Tokyo and Yokohama in 1872. The railways were nationalised in the early 1900s and continued to expand, with new line construction continuing through the 1980s. However, the 1980s also brought rising costs and falling revenues, so the state-owned network was split into seven different companies. Each company owns and maintains its section of tracks and operates the trains. Following on from Japan's Railways: Hokkaido to Chubu, this book takes the reader on a journey from Kinki to Kyushu, showcasing the lesser-known, and lesser-visited, lines. Spanning the years between 2004 and 2016, this book is fully illustrated with more than 170 images, and shows how the lines have changed during this time, along with the various trains and tracks that cover Japan. Beautifully illustrated, this book is a product of seeral visits made by the author to Japan over a 14-year period. During this time, new trains had been introduced, old trains retired; new lines had opened, some lines sadly have closed, and several fine new museums had opened. This book looks at the changing scene of Japan's railways. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Since World War Two, South Korea and Taiwan have expanded their respective railway networks to add modern high-speed and urban metro lines, and in the process have become technological powerhouses. Emerging from three decades of Japanese occupation and the Korean War, the nascent Republic of South Korea had a sizeable railway system already in place. Later in the century, it tendered for the construction of high-speed lines, which are now in full operation, together with a host of technologically advanced metro and light-rail networks serving the major cities. Taiwan had also seen a long spell of occupation by Japan, which had constructed railways and accompanying infrastructure throughout the island. After World War Two and the ensuing Chinese Civil War, Taiwan became the refuge of the deposed Nationalist government and went on to develop its own high-tech culture. This included high-speed railways to complement the stopping services built on largely unfavourable, mountainous terrain. With over 180 colour photographs, this book offers a visual record of travels around South Korea and Taiwan, incorporating important historical events and technological developments and enticing visitors from around the world. AUTHOR: David is a professional Highways and Transportation engineer based in Northland, north New Zealand. He was born in the UK and after a childhood of extensively travelling around Europe, he relocated to New Zealand in 2015 and has used New Zealand as a base to explore the railways of Australia and Asia. For David, bliss is being on a slow train to somewhere he has never been before. With over 180 colour photographs, this book offers a visual record of travels around South Korea and Taiwan, incorporating important historical events and technological developments and enticing visitors from around the world. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

paperback. Condition: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…
