This work fills a gap by presenting hoverflies, emblematic of their appearance, their omnipresence in natural environments, the countryside and cities, and the services they provide, particularly to agriculture. With 228 species recorded at the date of this work, the canton of Geneva, which occupies less than one percent of the surface area of Switzerland, is home to almost half of the hoverfly species known in the country. They are presented here in a form accessible to a wide audience and illustrated for more than half of them. This first monograph dedicated to this group in Switzerland provides information on the biology, habitat and distribution of hoverflies, but also on observation techniques and the information that these insects can provide.
