Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A handsome First U.S. Printing of one of the earliest comprehensive monographs devoted to Eero Saarinen (1910-1961), published only a decade after the architect's death. Originally issued in Japan in 1968 by Bijutsu Shuppan-sha as part of the influential Gendai Kenchikuka Shirizu (Contemporary Architects Series), this expanded English-language edition features a new critical introduction by architectural historian Rupert Spade and outstanding photography by Yukio Futagawa, whose large-format architectural photographs helped define twentieth-century architectural publishing. The volume surveys Saarinen's most celebrated commissions, including the Gateway Arch, Dulles International Airport, TWA Flight Center at JFK, General Motors Technical Center, IBM Research Center, CBS Headquarters, Bell Laboratories, MIT Kresge Auditorium, North Christian Church, and numerous lesser-known projects through photographs, plans, elevations, and concise scholarly commentary. The Japanese production quality is excellent, with crisp duotone printing and richly reproduced color plates. First U.S. printing (1971), explicitly stated on the copyright page. Published by Simon and Schuster from the 1968 Japanese edition, with newly prepared English text. This is the desirable first American issue rather than a later reprint and belongs to the respected Library of Contemporary Architects series. Condition: Book: Near Fine. Black cloth binding is exceptionally clean with bright silver spine and front-cover lettering, square corners, tight binding, and clean interior free of ownership markings. Dust Jacket: Very Good+. Original unclipped jacket shows light age toning, minor rubbing, a few small edge creases, and slight wear at the spine ends and corners without significant tears or loss. Overall an attractive, well-preserved copy with an unusually clean text block. While Saarinen himself is the obvious attraction, many collectors specifically seek this edition because of Yukio Futagawa's photography. Futagawa (1932-2013) became one of the world's most influential architectural photographers through his monumental GA (Global Architecture) publications. His dramatic compositions - especially of the TWA Terminal and Dulles Airport - did much to shape how Saarinen's work has been understood by later generations. Equally noteworthy is the understated dust jacket by J + M Condon, whose restrained modernist typography and full-height architectural photograph exemplify early-1970s architectural book design. Rupert Spade (1928-1997) was a British architectural historian, critic, and writer best known for producing accessible yet scholarly studies of leading modern architects. His work helped introduce postwar audiences to twentieth-century architecture through carefully researched monographs and critical essays. Photographs by Yukio Futagawa (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A handsome First U.S. Printing of one of the finest early monographs devoted to pioneering modernist architect Richard Neutra (1892-1970), issued shortly after his death as part of Simon & Schuster's acclaimed Library of Contemporary Architects series. The volume combines Rupert Spade's critical introduction with 86 photographs by celebrated Japanese architectural photographer Yukio Futagawa, including striking black-and-white and color plates, architectural drawings, floor plans, chronologies, and bibliography. Originally published in Japan in 1969, this English-language edition contains newly prepared text and was printed in Japan to an exceptionally high production standard. The copyright page states "First U.S. printing." The book documents many of Neutra's most significant residential commissions - including the Lovell Health House, Kaufmann House, Tremaine House, Nesbitt House, Moore House, Singleton House, Brown House, and VDL Research House - through Futagawa's meticulous photography, which has become highly regarded in architectural publishing. This volume remains an important reference for collectors of Modernism, California architecture, and twentieth-century design. The dust jacket was designed by J+M Condon, an understated but elegant modernist design complementing Futagawa's cover photograph. Condition: Near Fine book / Near Fine dust jacket. Black cloth boards remain exceptionally clean with bright silver spine and front-cover lettering. Binding is tight and square. Interior is clean with no ownership marks, writing, or highlighting observed. Dust jacket is unclipped, showing light age toning, a few shallow edge creases and small closed wrinkles along the upper edge, with minor rubbing and gentle shelf wear. Overall an attractive, well-preserved copy. While Richard Neutra is the book's subject, Yukio Futagawa (1932-2013) deserves equal attention from collectors. One of the twentieth century's foremost architectural photographers, Futagawa's work for Global Architecture (GA) and related publications helped shape how generations of architects studied modern buildings. His precise compositions and mastery of natural light transformed architectural monographs from documentary records into works of visual art. The Library of Contemporary Architects series, produced in collaboration with Futagawa, remains one of the most influential architectural publishing projects of the early 1970s. Photographs by Yukio Futagawa (illustrator).
