C. 100 pages per volume. Many of the anonymous melodies have been attributed to the editor, Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith (1780-1829). Songs by Robert Tannahill, and others set by Smith, also first appeared in this work. Other contributors included Robert Burns, James Hogg and Walter Scott, Robert Allan, Alexander Laing and John Ross. The binding is fairly contemporary half leather over marbled paper covered boards. Gilt titles and decoration to spine. The leather is quite worn and has been fairly crudely repaired at the top of the spine after a tear about an inch from the top. Otherwise the contents are clean with a little foxing and offsetting. PLEASE NOTE: Heavy book so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.

Titles in gilt to red spine labels. The bindings are in excellent condition. Fore edges untrimmed. The contents are generally in very good condition with a little foxing and offsetting. A name of a previous owner is written to the top of the title page of volume 5. There is a stain to the top outer corner of the last 10-12 pages of volume 3. The title page of volume 3 has about 1cm loss to the inner edge from the bottom for about 11cm, not affecting any text.
