Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1956. First edition. September, 1956, whole number 50, issue number 16 under the name "Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser" (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertiser" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction.) Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, a whopping 72 pp. - thick, for this fanzine. Near Fine. Small chip top right front and another middle left back (see scans), and that's about it. Not much toning to the contents at all; bright, tight and nearly flawless. This September of 1956 issue is certainly one of the best produced in the entire sequence; Ron Smith was really feeling his oats at this time. Featured are "Weird Tales in Retrospect" by August Derleth, and part 3 of Lin Carter's astonishingly intensive research into the of actual books mentioned by H.P. Lovecraft in his stories. Bless him for the energy he spent. A plethora of great illustrations grace this issue, perhaps more than any other issue (of this or any sci-fi genre fanzine of the era, one would guess): H.R. Van Dongen's cover is joined by a bunch of Jack Gaughan illustrations, plus some by each of Dan Adkins, Cindy (Smith), and Marvin Bryer, plus cartoon illustrations by "Miller" and Dave Jenrette - all managed by Art Director Cindy Smith. Other articles include "Randall Garrett's Memo to E.A. Robinson", Larry T. Shaw's "The Baker Murder Case", Lin Carter's poem "The Return of the Fairies", Edmond Hamilton's "Time Traveling in Ohio", a Jonathan Hoag poem reprint, courtesy of George Wetzel, "To the Grand Canyon of the Ohio", William F. Nolan's "Dark Souls in Jeopardy" (a short modernistic three-act play), Garth Bentley's "Complaint of the EM", and illustrated humor by Dave Jenrette, "People to Avoid at a Convention", as a tri-fold foldout. Also, of course, the original meat of the fanzine, the book reviews, here handled mostly by Carter, Robert Silverberg, and Charles Freudenthal. Even some of the seemingly-now-out-of-date book ad from sellers. Pretty much the peak of fanzine-ism. Collector gold, and scarce as hen's teeth. Please review scans. l-pr1. Materials presented drawn largely from the Jean-Noël Herli Archive. "Exhibition invitations? I've seen a few. Any working art critic inevitably acquires an extensive knowledge of this genre of printed ephemera. Heralding gallery and museum shows, invitations flood the mailbox, crowd the desk and all too often accumulate so intractably on the kitchen counter as to seem part of the decor. You can't live with them, and until the show is over, you can't throw them out. Still, life without such art-world byproducts would be a lot more difficult. Not only do they convey the important facts -- the who, when and where -- of shows that need to be seen. They're also advertisements bent on seducing us into attendance by being clever, eye-catching or provocative -- although sometimes they nip interest in the bud. (There's probably no art lover with mailing-list credentials who hasn't held up some gallery announcement and said, "Forget it!") Invitations are style statements in a minor key, ancillary artworks of a collective sort. Designed by artists, by graphic designers, by art dealers and museum curators -- usually a combination of the above -- they are the advance guard for the real thing. Their merit is judged in the very act of reading one's mail." -- Roberta Smith, "Art Invitations As Small Scraps Of History," New York Times, May 16, 1993. Very Good. Light edge wear. The present collection offers a window into the literary world of American poet and humorist Ogden Nash (1902-1971). It is comprised of 239 volumes published between 1886 and 1971, among which are numerous presentation and association copies. All books in the present collection come from the shared personal library of Ogden and Frances Nash. The collection spans poetry, humor, light verse, and literary criticism, and includes a significant number of first and limited editions, often in original bindings or dust jackets. Of particular note are six books inscribed by Nash to his wife, Frances (including five authored by Nash, one of which is in an "Author's Copy" half-leather binding). Included in the collection are 59 works by Nash, three of which feature edits to the text in Nash's hand. Twenty-seven of these Nash publications are Author's copies bound in half-leather. There are an additional 48 volumes bearing inscriptions to Nash from other authors and poets, most notably twelve volumes inscribed by S.J. Perelman. Among the 132 uninscribed volumes included here, 45 bear Ogden Nash's ownership inscription (10 bear the ownership inscription of Frances Nash). The number and range of authorial inscriptions represented in the present collections reflect Nash's wide-ranging literary friendships and professional associations. Notable among these are twelve warmly inscribed titles by humorist S.J. Perelman, whose acerbic wit is on display in a series of affectionate, playful, and sometimes satirical inscriptions to both Nash and his wife, Frances. These volumes also reflect Perelman and Nash's shared experiences in Hollywood and the literary scene of mid-century America. Other highlights include inscriptions from John Betjeman, Christopher Morley, E.C. Bentley, A.P. Herbert, David McCord, William Plumer Fowler, and Holger Lundbergh, among others-each evidencing Nash's influence and the esteem in which he was held across literary and cultural circles in the U.S. and the U.K. Of particular note are the six books personally inscribed by Ogden Nash to his wife, Frances, often composed in his characteristic rhymed style. These inscriptions reflect a deep relationship of tenderness, humor, and enduring partnership. The collection also includes school prize books awarded to Nash in the 1910s, including works by Matthew Arnold, Robert Burns, and Aeschylus, many bound in gilt-tooled leather and bearing formal prize inscriptions from St. George's School. These early items chart the poet's formative years and offer rare provenance tied to his intellectual development. 1399573. Special Collections - Upstairs.…
