Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. THUNDER IN AMERICA: THE IMPROBABLE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN OF JESSE JACKSON, Bob Faw and Nancy Skelton; foreword by Dan Rather, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, stated first printing, 1986. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog ears. There is no bookplate or signature of a previous owner. Not a remainder or library book. The dark gray boards are in near fine condition (light bumping at top of spine). The dust jacket is in very good condition (crinkling at top of spine). 8 x 6 ¼, 263 pages, 20 ounces XX [From the dust jacket] He was "Thunder" to the Secret Service, "Reverend" to staff members, "one hundred and ninety pounds of intellectual dynamite . . . a bad dude … our Savior" to adoring congregations, and a grandstanding Elmer Gantry to his detractors. He is Jesse Louis Jackson, and THUNDER IN AMERICA is the story of the first serious presidential bid by a black American. America had never seen anything quite like Jesse Jackson. "This ain't no ordinary campaign. It's about finding the light," he roared to one audience. His words could mesmerize; he could infuriate and inspire, could savage egos or elevate the downtrodden. Bob Faw and Nancy Skelton covered his campaign as reporters, and their book shows why the campaign was both doomed and glorious, both a success and a failure. They saw it as a remarkable experiment: a man running for an office he knew he couldn't win but reaching out to thousands who had never been part of the political process before. "Run, Jesse, run!" chanted throngs of supporters, black and white, as he spoke to people who saw in him the potential to make a difference. For two years the authors worked closely with Jackson, his wife, and his campaign workers. They saw him in public and in private, they saw him filled with joy, anger, grief, and compassion. They reveal how Jackson attracted those who needed to believe and how he repelled those who couldn't or wouldn't understand his message. His campaign exposed the nerve of racism in America. In the end, he was one measure of how far the country had come and how far it had to go. XX Bob Faw has been a correspondent for CBS News since 1980. In 1984 he received an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his coverage of the Jackson campaign. he lives and works in New York City. The late Nancy Skelton was a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times for seven years and for the Sacramento Bee for eighteen years.…

Hardcover. Condition: very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First Printing. 24 cm,xi, [1], 263 pages, notes, index. Foreword by Dan Rather. Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. (born Jesse Louis Burns; October 8, 1941) is an American civil rights activist, Baptist minister, and politician. He was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988 and served as a shadow U.S. Senator for the District of Columbia from 1991 to 1997. He is the founder of the organizations that merged to form Rainbow/PUSH. In the primaries, Jackson, who had been written off by pundits as a fringe candidate with little chance at winning the nomination, surprised many when he took third place behind Senator Gary Hart and former Vice President Walter Mondale, who eventually won the nomination. Jackson garnered 3,282,431 primary votes, or 18.2 percent of the total, in 1984, and won five primaries and caucuses, including Louisiana, the District of Columbia, South Carolina, Virginia, and one of two separate contests in Mississippi. As he had gained 21% of the popular vote but only 8% of delegates, he afterwards complained that he had been handicapped by party rules. While Mondale (in the words of his aides) was determined to establish a precedent with his vice presidential candidate by picking a woman or visible minority, Jackson criticized the screening process as a "p.r. parade of personalities". The improbable Presidential campaign of Jesse Jackson. In 1984, Jesse Jackson became the second African American (after Shirley Chisholm) to mount a nationwide campaign for President of the United States, running as a Democrat. An accomplished writer, Faw co-authored "Thunder in America: the Impossible Campaign of the Rev. Jesse Jackson" with Los Angeles Times reporter Nancy Skeleton. Award-winning journalist Bob Faw joined NBC News as a National Correspondent based in Washington, D.C., in September 1994. Prior to joining NBC, Faw was with CBS News for 17 years. While there, he served as a news correspondent based in New York since 1984. He joined CBS News in 1977 as a Chicago-based reporter. Faw has received several awards for his work including a 1984 Emmy for his coverage of the Jesse Jackson campaign, a 1986 Emmy for a series on racism, and a 1988 Emmy for his report that aired on the newsmagazine "48 Hours." He was also awarded the 1982 Overseas Press Club Award for his coverage of the invasion of Lebanon by Israel. In 2000, he received another Overseas Press Club Award for a Nightly News report on Mozambique; that report also received an Emmy in 2000. Faw came to CBS News from WBBM-TV in Chicago (1971-1977) where he was awarded a 1978 Columbia-DuPont, a local Emmy, and a UPI Illinois Broadcast award for his reports on PBB contamination. He received a local Emmy in 1976 for his report on a subway crash, and in 1973 for an expose on fraud in the pet industry. Faw began his broadcast career as a general assignment reporter/anchor at KING-TV in Seattle, WA (January 1969-June 1970). He then moved to WNAC-TV in Boston, where he worked as a general assignment reporter/producer (June 1970-January 1971).…
