Paperback. P N Singer (University of Newcastle upon Tyne), Little, Brown Spark. A recently discovered account of an Austrian Jewish writer's flight, persecution, and clandestine life in wartime France. As arts editor for one of Vienna's principal newspapers, Moriz Scheyer knew many of the city's foremost artists, and was an impo…rtant literary journalist. With the advent of the Nazis he was forced from both job and home. In 1943, in hiding in France, Scheyer began drafting what was to become this book. Tracing events from the Anschluss in Vienna, through life in Paris and unoccupied France, including a period in a French concentration camp, contact with the Resistance, and clandestine life in a convent caring for mentally disabled women, he gives an extraordinarily vivid account of the events and experience of persecution. After Scheyer's death in 1949, his stepson, disliking the book's anti-German rhetoric, destroyed the manuscript. Or thought he did. Recently, a carbon copy was found in the family's attic by P.N. Singer, Scheyer's step-grandson, who has translated and provided an epilogue. Paperback.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Galen of Pergamum (AD 129--c. 210), physician and philosopher, anatomist, logician, clinical and pharmacological theorist and researcher, and personal doctor to the emperor Marcus Aurelius, was the most influential and versatile medical author of the Graeco-Roman world. Galen: An Anthology p…rovides the most comprehensive range of his medical, philosophical, and autobiographical works in English, each accompanied by a brief introduction and explanatorynotes. Grouped by themes, the selected texts encompass the scope and variety of Galen's work, from the nature of his medical practice to the content of his philosophical theories. Thisanthology includes revised translations of Galen's most accessible and interesting shorter works alongside fresh translations of excerpts from the most important longer ones--texts which are in many cases inaccessible or out of print. The translations rely on the latest scholarly research, and in the case of several works, on the findings of a recently discovered manuscript. The writings cover Galen's anatomical studies, physiological and philosophical theories, clinical practice, and thedramatic events of his high-profile career as physician to the imperial family at Rome. A voluminous author, Galen also reveals a variety of fascinating details on everyday life in the Roman world, including dietary practices, education, literary and intellectual culture, doctor--patient relationships, and bitterly conducted medical rivalries. A general introduction by the volume's editor gives a summary of Galen's work and intellectual contribution, discussing his position in the scientific and literary culture of his time and his immense legacy from antiquity down to today. Paperback. Condition: New. The book presents the author's latest research on ancient perceptions of time; it centres on medical discussions, especially of the doctor-philosopher Galen, while also contextualizing his work within Graeco-Roman evidence and discussions - archaeological, medical, technological, philosophical, literar…y - more broadly. The focus is on questions of medical or experiential significance: life cycles, disease cycles, daily regimes for mind and body, clinical assessment, including the vital area of diagnosis through the pulse, technologies of time measurement. But the philosophical background is also examined: questions of the nature and definition of time and its relationship to space and motion. Galen offers original contributions in all these areas, at the same time as shedding important light on both contemporary attitudes and previous discussions. The book thus offers an accessible and vivid overview of key issues in ancient time perception and awareness, while also offering the first in-depth exploration of the insights that the Galenic texts add to this picture. Five thematic chapters - Time Measurement, Year and Life Cycles, Biography, Medical Cycles - consider a wide range of evidence and of recent scholarship, while highlighting the contribution of medical texts.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 2016. xiv, 305pp. B&W illustrations. Translated, with an epilogue, essay and notes, by the author's grandson P.N. Singer. "In 1943, hidden by the Resistance in a French convent, Moriz Scheyer began drafting an account of his wartime experience…s: a tense, moving, at times almost miraculous story of flight and persecution in Austria and France. Completed in 1945, Scheyer's memoir is remarkable not just for the riveting events that it recounts, but as a near-unique survivor's perspective from that time." Both the book and unclipped dust jacket are in excellent condition with no inscriptions, and all contents are tight and clean.
