Bystry a zrucny Taras zaujal Brjullova, slavneho ruskeho malire a profesora Akademie, a ten se s prateli postaral o vykoupeni nadanebo nevolnika. Statkar chtel za Tarase 2500 rublu. Brjullov nakreslil portret basnika Zukovskeho a pritelkyne Zukovskeho zaridila, aby obraz vyhrala carevna. Udalost byla kritizovana a Sevcenko, ktery byl odsouzen, neznaje zakulisni pletky, citil sve odsouzeni jako nejtezsi urazku. Touto autobiografickou povidkou chtel pravdive vylicit sve osvobozeni. Jen konec povidky, sebevrazda chlapcova, neodpovida skutecnosti: Sevcenko tu kombinuje svuj osud s osudem jednoho ze svych pratel. V "Umelci" setkavame se s desitkami jmen umelcu ruznych epoch a narodu, jez nam prozrazuji nejen uctyhodnou pili, s jakou si Sevcenko za pomerne kratkou dobu vsechny tyto vedomosti osvojil, nybrz i vysokou uroven jeho poznatku.".
