'Practically, I am not at all clear what the issue of the delay will be so far as I, and so far as Ryan, are concerned. The B.B.C. job [.] has been announced sooner than was intended & has not lightened my day's work. Ryan is uncertain when he will get away, but may be off at the beginning of August.' Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 84 pages, 4 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations, portrait ; 23 cm. In English with some Maori. Summary:"The rarity of an unprejudiced account of the manners and customs of the Maoris in the period of initial European contact emphasises the importance of Father Servant's manuscript, presented for the first time in its entirety. An honest and accurate observer, and with remarkably little European or Christian bias, this Marist missionary has recorded the life, customs and beliefs of the Maoris he encountered during his four years in the Hokianga. Isolated in a French Catholic Mission station with little contact with other Europeans, Father Servant was able to devote himself entirely to the Maori people and communicate them in their own language. Father Servant's manuscript, discovered by Mr D.R. Simmons in the Marist Archives in Rome, has been translated by Dr. J. Glasgow, formerly of Auckland University and edited by Mr. Simmons, himself an experienced ethnologist. A foreword and notes explain the value of the manuscript as a document which will fascinate ethnologist, anthropologist and layman alike".

Lithograph portrait, 7.1/4 x 10 3/4 inches including engraved border with title and dedication. Marie Therese de camp was born in 1774, daughter of a French Army Officer and a Swiss mother. From an early age she showed talent as a dancer and performer and by the mid-1790's was playing at the Haymarket and Drury lane theatres and went on to write a number of plays. She married Charles Kemble, who with his sister Sarah (later Mrs Siddons) and brother John Philip, had made the acting profession 'respectable'. The kemble theatrical dynasty continued with Marie Therese's daughter Fanny, a noted actress and author, whose younger sister was opera singer Adelaide Kemble.
