This research has been presented during the special sessions on 'Research and Development in Nuclear Explosion Monitoring' convened during the 2007 and 2008 General Assemblies of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). The special sessions were introduced after the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO Prepcom) had convened a scientific symposium in 2006 on 'CTBT: Synergies with Science 1996-2006 and beyond' marking the tenth anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the CTBT Treaty. With regard to the seismo-acoustic fields several papers provide important updates on advances made in these fields since publication of 'Monitoring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty' (see PAGEOPH topical volumes 158-159, 2001-2002). Moreover, this topical volume expands on these publications by including radionuclide and noble gas monitoring, as well as atmospheric transport modeling. In these two areas, significant progress has been made in recent years. Two papers studying the 2006 North Korean nuclear test elucidate how progress made in the relevant fields has allowed for a good understanding on the characteristics of this underground nuclear test.

Die sich daraus ableitende Forschungsfrage lautet: 'Ist es möglich, den Gehalt des Kohlendioxids in geschlossenen Innenräumen durch einen Internet of Things Prototyp zu überwachen und entsprechend geltenden Gesundheitsstandards zu optimieren '. Die Forschungsfrage soll anhand der Luftqualität eines geschlossenen Innenraumes beantwortet werden. Dazu wird die Luftqualität an sieben aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen durch den Internet of Things Prototyp ausschließlich überwacht und aufgezeichnet. Zum Vergleich wird an weiteren sieben aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen die Luftqualität durch den Internet of Things Prototyp überwacht, wobei zusätzlich Optimierungen vorgenommen werden.Die Hauptquelle für den Kohlendioxidgehalt in geschlossenen Innenräumen basiert auf der menschlichen Atmung. Die ausgeatmete Luft enthält neben Kohlendioxid auch Aerosole. Durch weitere Emissionen von Geräten und Materialien sowie von Staubpartikeln wird die Luftqualität zusätzlich verschlechtert. Diese verbrauchte Luft kann vom Menschen als stickig, abgestanden und ermüdend empfunden werden. Krankheitserreger, wie bspw. COVID-19 werden durch die Luft bzw. durch die in der Luft enthaltenen Aerosole verteilt. Durch die Einatmung kontaminierter Aerosole kann sich ein gesunder Mensch infizieren und somit krank werden. Die schlechte Luftqualität kann deshalb nicht nur die Leistungsfähigkeit des Menschen beeinträchtigen, sondern auch der Gesundheit schaden. Das daraus entstehende Problem ist demnach die Optimierung der Luftqualität von geschlossenen Innenräumen um die Vermeidung von Faktoren, die sich nachteilig auf die Gesundheit und Leistung des Menschen auswirken.
