This book is primarily a textbook written for people working on fatigue problems of engineering structures and materials associated with design, predictions, load spectra and experimental verifications. Many different fields of interest are involved, as the block diagram on…the front cover indicates. It is of great importance that all these aspects are well recognized and understood. The author explains the various topics in a number of chapters. Understanding of the fatigue phenomena covering both crack initiation and crack growth is emphasized in view of possible influences of design variables, material selection, production technology and load spectra on the fatigue performance of a structure. Prediction methods for fatigue lives and fatigue crack growth are discussed as well as verification by experiments. Load spectra analysis and statistical aspects are also addressed. The first edition of this book was well received and has been used extensively in various courses taught to staff members and students of universities and other technical colleges as well as in industries and at research institutes. Therefore it was considered time for a second edition. In general, the format of the first edition of the book has been maintained, but the whole text has been carefully revised. A major change is the CD which is now attached to the book. The CD contains exercices on alla chapters which can be used in courses, but also for self-tuition and examinations. Secondly, the CD also includes more detailed information on design against fatigue, prediction scenarios, fatigue experiments (how and why), fractography, and analysis of case histories. Sammlerstück (!): NLL-Berichte wurden in sehr…kleinen Stückzahlen gedruckt (typisch 3080 Exemplare), oft nur intern verteilt. Schijves frühe Arbeiten sind deutlich seltener als NACA-Material und wissenschaftlich relevanter als viele AGARD-Reports. Direkter Bezug zur Comet-Ära und zur Entstehung der modernen Rissmechanik. Der Bericht ist Teil der Reihe der Technischen Notizen (TN) des Nationaal Luchtvaartlaboratorium (NLL), Amsterdam. Das NLL war in den 1950er Jahren das zentrale Forschungsinstitut der niederländischen Luftfahrtindustrie und arbeitete eng mit Fokker, der niederländischen Luftwaffe und internationalen Forschungsverbünden (ICAS, AGARD, NLR Vorgänger) zusammen. Schijve legte als Mitarbeiter eine der ersten systematischen europäischen Untersuchungen zur Ermüdungsrissausbreitung in Leichtmetallen vor. Dabei analysierte Schijve Frequenzeffekte (Vergleich niedriger vs. hoher Lastwechselraten), den Einfluss variabler Spannungsamplituden und hoher Spitzenlasten auf die Rissgeschwindigkeit, er verglich dabei kleine Proben, versteifte Paneelen und vollständige Strukturen. Hier war verläßliches Wissen gefragt: das erste in Serie gebaute Strahlverkehrsflugzeug der Welt, die de Havilland DH.106 Comet, war 1954 drei Mal vom Himmel gefallen. Die Ermittlungen des Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) deckten drei Absturzgründe auf. Die Designer der Comet hatten sich für nahezu quadratische Fenster entschieden: an den scharfen Ecken traten extreme Spannungsspitzen auf. Die ständigen Druckwechsel beim Aufstieg und Abstieg hatten zu Materialermüdung in der dünnen Aluminium-Außenhaut geführt. Ausgehend von winzigen Haarrissen an den Fensterecken (oder Luken) riss die Struktur unter Flugdruck schlagartig auf, was das Flugzeug in der Luft zerriss. Die Entdeckung war aufschlußreich und beunruhigend: die Konstrukteure der Comet hatten ihr Material mit den Ermüdungsvermutungen August Wöhlers (1819 - 1914) eingesetzt, der sich als Mitarbeiter der Preußischen Staatseisenbahnen mit gebrochenen Eisenbahnachsen und Radsätzen, dort mit Materialversagen durch wiederholte Biegebelastung, mit Schienenbrüchen durch rollende Lasten beschäftigt und die Nachwelt über achtzig Jahre mit der Botschaft beruhigt hatte: unterhalb der Dauerfestigkeit gebe es keine Risse'. Eine Falschmeldung, die sich nach den Comet-Abstürzen als Arbeitsbeschaffungsprogramm auswies: und hier war unser Autor ein europäischer Pionier. Er begann, Risswachstum experimentell zu messen, dabei variable Amplituden zu berücksichtigen, reale Strukturen zu untersuchen, Frequenzeffekte zu analysieren und bei alledem die Grenzen der Wöhler- Welt aufzuzeigen.
