Dr. Stevenson, a previous president of the Chicago Womans Club, began her work in the wake of the economic hardship caused by The Great Chicago Fire of 1871. She recognized the overwhelming lack of shelter available to women in need and brought her concerns before the club in 1893. The club responded to her call for help by raising money to start the Womans Model Lodging House, the first of its kind in the city. Within a few years, the organization had expanded in both its membership and its services. By the 1900s, it had become one of the most established and effective organizations of its type in the country, committed to providing shelter to women and children as well as helping alleviate the hardships and sorrows they faced. This book traces the growth of the organization, places it within its historical context, and shares the stories of the women it helped. The author explores the social and economic issues women faced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, through the lens of the Stevenson Memorial, and discusses the challenges and rewards for women entering service professions during the same time period. General wear to cover; all corners bumped and boards exposed at tips. Cloth worn with some tearing at top and bottom of spine. Embossed boards with lettering in bright gilt on front and spine. Blue painted pastedown and front free endpapers. The textblock is starting to pull away from the covers at the top, though the bottom half of the textblock is firmly attached. A little foxing to the title page, a very little amount scattered throughout. No marking or writing, no soiling. 186pp. with a list of the International Scientific Series, and four pages of advertisements, many illustrations. This title is uncommon, especially in first edition, but the most noteworthy point about it is that it's a science book written by a woman in 1875 and also illustrated by a woman.
