Le numerose edizioni settecentesche che s'intersecano l'una con l'altra, la mancanza degli autografi e la vastità dell'impresa di fronte alle cento e più commedie, alle decine di melodrammi giocosi, di drammi…per musica e di altri componimenti teatrali, cui si affiancano poesie, prose amplissime di memoria e un cospicuo epistolario, hanno impedito fino ad ora che si affrontasse la questione dell'edizione critica delle opere di Carlo Goldoni. La cultura italiana e internazionale si era rassegnata e accomodata all'ombra della grande, meritoria fatica di Giuseppe Ortolani iniziata nei primi anni del secolo, senza, tuttavia, un chiaro progetto e senza precisi criteri filologici. Alla base di questa edizione vi è stata una preliminare indagine sulle stampe volute dall'autore dal 1750 agli anni ultimi della sua lunga vita al fine di determinare, opera per opera, i diversi stadi del testo. Da qui la presenza di un ricco apparato di varianti che illustra l'evoluzione della singola opera fino al momento in cui l'autore non impone ad essa una fisionomia definitiva. Consegnati al teatro, i testi, che erano nati per esso, riprenderanno immediatamente il loro cammino nella continua e molteplice dinamica dell'interpretazione che qui viene di volta in volta ricostruita nelle pagine dedicate alla fortuna.
