Book First Edition
No Binding. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. These two prints are both etchings after watercolour paintings by Paul Sandby RA. They are mounted on paper which is dated 1796 (from watermark), and are from a portfolio of prints which were bound in with another set of prints. They come from Select Views in England, Scotland and Ireland, (see below for further detail). The two prints have been mounted without the titles shown. I am unable to identify the location of one, engraved by William Watts, which shows a ruined castle and manor house, with a girl in the foreground carrying a water pail on her head. The other I have identified as being Remains of The Tower at Luton, Bedfordshire, engraved by Michel Angelo Rooker, showing a haycart, a gentleman on a horse with a lady riding postillion behind, and farm workers in the foreground. The prints are in superb condition. The paper on which they are printed, and the mount, are heavy laid paper of the right period. They are trimmed to the image, and only tipped in (not pasted) to the mount, so they could be easily removed. The printed area of each print is approx 18.5 x 13 cm and the paper on which they are mounted is just over A3 size. There is a tissue guard still in place. Please see my other items for the other prints I have for sale also after Paul Sandby, from the same publication. They will be sent rolled in a 4" tube Further information It is considered that these prints are from the first published state of the prints, being the Copper Plate Magazine which issued the prints singly at 1 shilling a plate. Thus they have been collected and mounted simply as prints without any explanatory text. In 1778 108 plates were collected into a volume and published by G Kearsly as The Virtuosi's Museum, containing Select Views in England, Scotland and Ireland, drawn by P Sandby R.A. The wholes series of prints was republished as A Collection of 150 Select Views in England, Scotland and Ireland, drawn by P Sandby R.A. by John Boydell in 1781. Paul Sandby R.A. (1731 - 1809) was a landscape and topographical painter and a pioneer watercolorist who, along with his brother Thomas, was a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. He is known to have been a significant influence on the great generation of watercolourists which succeeded him including J M W Turner and J S Cotman. He was also known to have had a sunny disposition, and this is reflected in his drawings, which are suffused with light and shade, beautifully crafted and full of interesting detail of domestic and public life, enhancing the architectural details and adding scale and perspective.
