No date, circa 1846. 6 1/4" x 9 3/4." Seventeen pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, slight wear to ext…remities, and occasional spots of foxing or discoloration. A Very Good copy. "Vol. IV--No. 7" of Peter Force's Collection of Historical Pamphlets. This is a pamphlet published by Peter Force that reprints a manuscript letter that was written by Samuel Gorton on June 30, 1669 in response to Nathaniel Morton's defamatory book about him. In this letter, Gorton focuses on religious and political subjects and apparently countered almost every point made against him in Morton's book. Samuel Gorton (1593-1677) was a businessman, politician, and civic leader of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations which was formed from the consolidation of Providence Plantations, Portsmouth, Newport, and Warwick. Gorton is perhaps best-known for being an outspoken advocate of unorthodox religious beliefs which greatly differed from the traditional Puritan theology in New England at the time. His followers were known as Gortonians, Gortonists, or Gortonites. Gorton was very critical of local ministers and magistrates and was at odds with many of them throughout New England (he was sentenced to death on one occasion for his religious beliefs). Nathaniel Morton (1616-1685) was an early settler of Plymouth Colony whose father, George Morton, was one of the founders of Plymouth. Morton kept meticulous records of Plymouth Colony's early history as its appointed Secretary. Notably, Morton made the first record listing the names of the signers of the Mayflower Compact and compiled New England's Memorial which is widely considered to be the first thorough history of Plymouth and the first history book published in the United States. Peter Force (1790-1868) was an American printer, publisher, editor, and historian. Force is perhaps best-known for his comprehensive collection of early American historical documents and for publishing them. This pamphlet is an example of one of Force's publications that became a part of a his four-volume publication of reprinted historical documents titled, Tracts and Other Papers, Relating to the Origin, Settlement, and Progress of the Colonies in North America, that was published between 1836 and 1846.
