The key to informed practice and intervention in social work lies in building and establishing a base that comprises of deliberations on theory, positions and movements. They play a key role in taking studied positions and cultivated interventions that then reflect the epistemic maturity of the profession mirroring onto praxis. This book attempts to bring together on one platform theories, positions and movements that influence the episteme of social work. The commencing point is the domain of social theorising from positivism to postmodernism. This is followed by positions offered by religion and faith and the deliberations in that realm. The third aspect is the modern and postcolonial realm falling within which are discussions on social reform, Gandhian thought and nationalism as also deliberations on social justice and human rights. Movements entail subaltern voices and praxis commencing with Dalit and tribal movements, transnational and indigenous discourses in the women s movement, queer theorisations and movements of alternative sexuality, discourses on ecology and disability. Finally, the attempt is to link discussions on theory, positions, movements and social work perspectives ranging from charity to critical practice. The book thus presents a comprehensive view of social theorisation, positions and movements that interface with social work and lend to a consolidation of perspectives. It would serve as reference material for graduate students in social work.…

Actors in social transformation: deliberating on a model. References. Index. This book examines the role of Hindu-inspired Faith Movements (HIFMs) as actors in social transformation. HIFMs have emerged as important actors in the modern civil society. In the contemporary Indian neo-liberal and postmodern scenario, HIFMs realize themselves by making public assertions through service or seva. Four pillars of HIFMs contemporary presence are Gurus, sociality, hegemony and social transformation. Gurus, who spearhead these movements, create a matrix of possible meanings in their public discourses. This allows their followers to pick up the required ingredients that aid transformation. Sociality, the tangible part of which is social service, is essentially seen as one core strategy of proliferation across HIFMs. Social service of the HIFMs spans and accommodates several domains. Service is further qualified by memories of the guru or his/her expansive agency. Remembrance of the Guru or his/her expansive agency. Remembrance of the guru is a catalyst for social action and demonstrates a preference for principles such as human rights, peace and justice, which the gurus are believed to embody. Hegemony is reflected in the fact that HIFMs social service ominously foreshadows the Hindutva doctrine. HIFMs essentially propose a model of Hindu inspired social transformation, which proposes a redeeming intervention of faith building into and transforming the civil society. (jacket).…

It further situates these movements in the context of the global political economy where such movements cross national boundaries to locate believers among the Hindu diaspora and others. In contemporary neoliberal India, HIFMs have become important actors, and they realize themselves by making public assertions through service. The four pillars of the contemporary presence of such movements are: gurus, sociality, hegemony and social transformation. Sociality is a core strategy of proliferation across such movements and implies social service, which is qualified by memories of the guru and what they are believed to embody. Hegemonyis reflected in the fact that social service in such movements often ominously imbibes right-wing or far-right Hinduism. They propose a model of Hindu-inspired social transformation, involving faith building into and transforming the civil society. The book discusses in a nuanced way several Hindu-inspired faith movements of various hues which have made national and international impact. This topical book is of interest to students and researchers in the fields of sociology, anthropology, social work, and social psychology, with a special interest in the study of religious movements.…
