Hardcover. Condition: VG+. First US Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. The original price of $5.00 is still present on the front flap. DJ shows some scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner chips/small tears. There is a small tape repair on the rear side, upper right corner. Dark gray cloth boards underneath are clean with the only issue being just a hint of edge/corner bumps. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues and text pages are tight. The book condition would grade higher but somebody has neatly mounted four pictures inside the front and rear boards using photo corners. The backsides of the artwork show the images came from a calendar. The artwork illustrations can easily be removed and the photo corners could be popped off, if desired. The only other issues found that the book is the title page has an address label at the top and page 16 has a small blue ink mark between the first and second paragraphs. No other markings found in the book, no remainder marks. The copyright page states first American edition.

Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. *** "Andre Salmon was one of the premier art critics of his day and the author of two important eyewitness accounts of early twentieth century art in France, La jeune peinture francaise and La jeune sculpture francais. These works capture the revolutionary spirit of the period and include references and jokes of a small coterie of artists and poets that included Picasso, Guillaume Apollinare, Max Jacob, Georges Braque, and Salmon himself. This is the first English-language translation of Salmon's first two books, which serve as the primary sources on the Fauves, the Cubists, and their avant-garde contemporaries. Gersh-Neic's translation includes annotations that expand upon the period, most notably the literary references that came so naturally to Salmon. His rapport with his peers becomes transparent, providing insight into the studio banter that gave rise to some of the art work of that era, particularly Picasso's collages. The introduction calls attention to Salmon's main criteria as a critic and offers an understanding of his personal aesthetics through which we gain a better sense of his ideas and prejudices. / Beth S. Gersh-Neic is Director of the New York Arts Exchange. She is the author of The Early Criticism of Andr Salmon: A Study of his Thoughts on Cubism (1991)." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: La jeune peinture francaise. Foreword; The fauves; An anecdotal history of cubism; Contemporary art; A rebirth of French landscape painting; Twentieth-century women painters; La jeune sculpture francaise. Foreword; The fable of the little tin fish; Doctrine; Under the gates of hell; The west; Figurative sculptors; Sculptresses; Humanism; Cannibalism; El guitare. Size: 8vo.
