Leather extremities lightly scuffed; small bookbinder's label affixed to the lower-right margin of the front pastedown; notably bears the ex-libris plate of the Bannerman of Elsick, Crimonogate. Light sporadic foxing throughout, chiefly confined to the endpapers; text-block otherwise clean. Overall, very good+. See OCLC #842939961 et al., which records generous North American and continental institutional holdings. Rare to be offered in commerce in this edition, state, and with this provenance. Title translation: "Memoirs to Serve for the History of Charles XIV John, King of Sweden and Norway; Containing: the Itinerary of a Journey in Sweden; an Account of the Revolution of 1809; the Political and Military Life of Bernadotte as a French General; his Election as Crown Prince of Sweden; his Acts and Correspondence; his Campaigns against Napoleon in 1813 and 1814; the Campaign in Norway; the End of the Reign of King Charles XIII; the Accession of Charles XIV John; his Coronation in Stockholm and his Consecration in Trondheim: all Collected and Written from Authentic Records". Contemporary biography of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, later Charles XIV John, King of Sweden and Norway (1763-1844). Published in Paris in 1820, merely two years following his accession, the work chronicles the monarch's early reign, political and military career, and unusual rise from French general to Scandinavian king. Bernadotte served as a French Revolutionary general and Marshal of France, active in several Napoleonic campaigns between 1805 and 1809, before shifting allegiances and forming Swedish alliances with Russia, Great Britain, and Prussia, culminating in the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig. Elected Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810, he became regent and then king of Sweden and Norway, reigning until his death in 1844.
