Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. What could have happened in South Africa before Apartheid actually took hold? A shocking and exciting view into what might have been. This is a story of an ordinary white South African and his epiphany on what could and would happen as South Africa created its Apartheid laws. Written in the…early 1950's, just as Apartheid was being devised and implemented, this short story demonstrates what the educated liberal white people of South Africa were thinking at the time. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. After the second world war Britain divested itself of the African colonies and this provided the opportunity for the National Party of the Union of South Africa to take political power over the country in 1948. They immediately began creating segregation laws (later called Apartheid) that di…scriminated against the Non-European races, which resulted in a three tier race system, made up of "whites," "coloureds," and "blacks." In the early 1950's these laws and regulations were only just beginning to be formed and introduced. They included the infamous pass laws, firstly creating a curfew for black people, but also restricting access to hospitals, train stations, public toilets and even beaches, often denoted by the signs: "Whites Only" or "Net Blanks" - the Afrikaans version. At this time many liberal white people spoke up against the encroaching racist state. None more so than the educated university fraternity and especially those at Fort Hare University in Alice in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Here many black African leaders were being educated, such as Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Desmond Tutu. Mike and Eileen Sadler were newly-weds and also studying at Fort Hare at that time and were part of the outspoken anti-apartheid and anti-racist groups. These three short stories, two written in the early 1950s, and one in the 1970s, remain a testament to and record of, the frail voices of the 'liberal whites' that often risked their careers and livelihoods, and in some cases freedom or even their lives, to voice their dissent to the evil of Apartheid and general racism. They speak clearly and openly about the injustice, cruelty and incongruity of a racist society. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The true, personal and extraordinary first-hand account of an ordinary young soldier who served in the South African Artillery during World War II.Mike Sadler joined the army at the tender age of 17 as a signaller in the South African Artillery. This is his story, of why and how he joined up…, his experiences under training, and his part in World War II in North Africa. He was stationed in Tobruk when it fell in June 1942 to Rommel's advance at the end of the Battle of Gazala. Mike was not yet 20 years old when he was captured and handed over to the Italian forces. His story then details his adventures as a prisoner of war, first in North Africa, and then in Italy and finally in Austria in Stalag 18C before release and freedom finally came. A very exciting but also touching and personal account of his own physical and spiritual journey, as well as a deep insight into the many men and women he met over this historic time. Mike Sadler (1922-2002) was an educator working mostly in Central and Southern Africa and the author of specialised textbooks and educational works of fiction.More information about Mike Sadler and his other publications can be found on This item is printed on demand.
