Leonardo da Vinci ci ha lasciato centinaia di disegni d'architettura, perlopiù bozze e schizzi, raramente annotati e spesso legati tra loro da un rapporto intricato. Questa produzione grafica, che esprime diverse fa…si della sua riflessione concettuale, rappresenta ancora una sfida per lo studio della storia dell'architettura. Alcuni disegni riguardano progetti concreti e riconoscibili, ma la maggior parte è dedicata a ricerche su soggetti che stimolano l'interesse del maestro toscano. Il presente volume esamina anche i rapporti diretti e indiretti che Leonardo stabilisce con i suoi committenti e le dinamiche di migrazione di certi suoi concetti. Viene così a distinguersi il carattere singolare del suo immaginario architettonico ed emergono gli elementi in comune con le opere dei maestri coevi. Seguendo criteri cronologici e tipologici, il volume si concentra su specifici temi della produzione artistica e progettuale di Leonardo: l'"Architettura dipinta" (punto di partenza della sua successiva attività a carattere monumentale), l'architettura religiosa, i monumenti sepolcrali, le dimore, le ristrutturazioni urbane e le fortificazioni. Una particolare attenzione è dedicata al linguaggio architettonico, alle creazioni effimere e a dettagli come le scale. Si intende inoltre definire il contesto storico ed esaminare il processo di assimilazione di certe idee che Leonardo eredita dal Rinascimento italiano, soprattutto durante l'attività presso la corte di Francesco I alla fine della sua carriera. Ci si propone, in ultimo, di considerare la fortuna del suo pensiero architettonico nel vasto panorama del Quattrocento e del Cinquecento. Il presente libro si inserisce tra le iniziative svolte nel 2019, anno del cinquecentenario anniversario della morte di Leonardo da Vinci, e aspira ad alimentare il dialogo interdisciplinare dedicato a questa figura chiave del Rinascimento europeo.
