Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover. Condition: VG orig. blue cloth. vii, 276 p.; 19.5 cm. `It would be idle to pretend that there were not churches in the Diocese of Exeter [where Ryle served as Bishop from 1901-03] in which the services were of a nature calculated to startle others besides the ultra-Protestant. For some forty years people in certain pa…rishes had been familiarised with teaching and ceremonial of the most advanced "Anglo-Catholic" type, and these developments had become so deeply rooted that the congregations had learnt to take them for granted.' (Fitzgerald, A memoir of Herbert Edward Ryle, p. 153) -- `Meanwhile, the Bishop endeavoured to make his position in these controversial matters perfectly clear by his own public teaching on the Church, the Invocation of Saints, Prayers to the Virgin Mary, and the like. In 1904 he collected together a number of his utterances on these points.' (p. 156) -- `The Council of Trent says, "That the Saints reigning together with Christ offer their prayers for men to God, and that it is good and useful to invoke them as suppliants, and for the sake of obtaining benefits from God through our Lord Jesus Christ, who is our only Redeemer and Saviour, to have recourse to their prayers, aid, and assistance." It is this position that our Church has repudiated.' (On the Church of England, p. 180).

London : William Hunt & Co. First edition, 1891. 16mo. 86 pp. Uncommon title. Original dark green cloth cover with gilt title on front cover. Clean and tight. Content…s clean and unmarked apart from neat previous owner's signature on ffep. Strange tiny hole through back of cover into the back pages affecting just a publication list of William Hunt and Co. A very good copy of this uncommon early edition of Ryle. To J.C. Ryle, the inspiration of the Scriptures was 'the very keel and foundation of Christianity', the underpinning without which Christians had no warrant for doctrine or practice, 'no solid ground for present peace or hope, and no right to claim the attention of mankind' But is all Scripture inspired? Are the very words and expressions used by the writers from God, or does inspiration mean something less than this? Ryle was convinced that the very words are from God, and that only this view makes sense of what the Bible itself claims.

A.D., and containing large fragments of the Pentateuch, should some day be found in Egypt, the world would hail the discovery as one of immense value to Biblical scholarship, and of surpassing interest to all true lovers of liter…ature.Such a discovery is not at all beyond the bounds of possibility. But, in the meantime, we must not neglect the treasures which we already possess. Philo wrote in the first half of the 1st Cent. A.D.; and his extant writings contain most extensive quotations from the Pentateuch. In the present work the attempt is made to collect, arrange in order, and for the first time print in full, all the actual quotations from the books of the Old Testament to be found in Philo's writings, and a few of his typical paraphrases. The quotations give us large fragments of the Greek Bible used by the most eminent Alexandrian Jew of that century. For the purpose of giving general assistance to students, I have added footnotes, dealing principally with the text of Philo's quotations compared with that of the Septuagint.' -- On variations from the LXX: A. from Philo's methods of teaching; B. from Philo's disregard for verbal accuracy; C. reproducing differences of rendering and reading: (a) uncial mss., (b) Old Latin and Samaritan versions, (c) Lucianic recension; D. arising from errors in the existing text of Philo, p. xxxv-xlv. -- Quotations from Genesis - Deut., p. 1-282; rest of O.T., p. [283-302]; appendix. Philo and the Apocrypha, p. [303]-05; index to quotations [from Philo's works], p. [307]-12. Good ex-lib. orig. blue cloth. Unread, most gatherings unopened.
