A 1st American edition (stated) of one of Thirkell's chronicles of Barsetshire from the early 1940s. Mauve boards with purple (?) lettering & decoration. Light edge wear to the DJ. Rubbing to the flap folds and spine hinges. The DJ has been backed in brown paper. A 1.25" piece is missing from the bottom of the spine with the brown aper showing. Light soiling to the DJ. PO book plate on the front paste down. PO acquisition note (CEL CHI 1-13-94) on the FFEP and notations on dates read (14) on the last page of text. Pencil note about the text on the RFEP. A very good copy.

"Drahomir Joseph Ruzicka, a Manhattan physician, was prominent among the pictorialists who acquired their reputations after World War I. Known throughout his photographic career as Dr. D. J. Ruzicka, he began showing his work in the 1910s and by the next decade had become a recognized salon exhibitor. He was a founding member of such groups as the Pictorial Photographers of America and the Pittsburgh Salon and an inspiration to camera clubs throughout the country. New York City was his favorite subject, and his images of the interior of Pennsylvania Station, always depicted with shafts of volume-defining sunlight, became something of a trademark." (Peterson). Illustrated with forty-nine striking full page photographs, including three double page plus a few in-text. The selection includes 'monumental' photographs taken in Prague, Venice, Rome, at the Pennsylvania Railway Station in New York, the Brooklyn Bride, etc. but also idyllic scenes in 'romantic' settings, landscapes as well as 'street photography,' e.g. depicting a family watching a parade passing by or a blind couple in Venice. Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. His wide-ranging achievements made a lasting impact on printing processes, horticulture, and environmental protection. During McFarland's early years, his father operated a nursery and a small weekly newspaper in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. McFarland worked in both of his father's businesses as a youth. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society.
