Reprint ed. Paperback trade, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), thick card covers (with flaps), few black & white photos, maps, minor edgewear. 282 pp. This book by Neil Rutherford is about Reverend Shirley Waldemar Baker, who arrived from London's East End after Tupou I, the first king of Tonga, asked for his help. The book relates the life and times of this gruff, bewhiskered Methodist minister who was a curious character often at odds with his peers. Baker's achievements, whether motivated by altruism or self-preservation, contributed significantly to the Tonga we know today.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A black coloured hardback book, with gilt titles running along the spine. Comes with nice clean, dust jacket, not price clipped. First published in 1977 by Oxford University Press, Melbourne, Australia, First Edition. This wonderful book is in really very good condition and as its a used book, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. 297 pages, all intact and nice tight binding. Tonga is one of the few remaining kingdoms in the world and surely the smallest. It is, moreover, the only Polynesian independence unbroken, and its cultural heritage largely intact. The work begins with the myths which Tongans tell about the origins of their land and people. The early history of the group is investigated through modern archaeological techniques and a recounting of ancient legends. Accounts are given of the coming of the western navigators, the arrival of the beachcombers and evangelization of the islands by Christian missionaries. The establishment of the Tongan Kingdom, the setting up of its constitution, the problems besetting the tiny state in the age of aggressive imperialism and the reign of the revered Queen Salote are dealt with. The book ends with an assessment of the problems of contemporary Tonga from the viewpoints of an anthropologist and an economist.
