So for centuries among the Jews, writers sought to shelter themselves behind the names of the great dead. In this they were guilty of no fraud. They imagined what Solomon or Enoch would say, or sing, upon a particular theme under given circumstances. It was not really they themselves, but their Solomon, their Enoch, Solomon or Enoch in them, who uttered the new prophesies or temple praises. Thus arose that body of literature, called by modern scholars, Pseudepigrapha, that is, writings erroneously, unhistorically, and yet sincerely, ascribed to heroic figures summed from the vasty deep by a self-denying imagination, eager to alter man's belief and custom, to interpret his hope and sorrow, without personal gain or fame, and also, may one add, without the deterrent of persecution to arrest free utterance Now it is a foolish modern prejudice against an ancient piece of literature that its author veiled his person in this fashion. The only question is: Was the writing of inherent value? Did it exercise influence. Paul Laune (illustrator).…

Bearss ; "Among the most disturbing scenes found in American history are the stark images of Union soldiers newly released from Andersonville. Those gaunt, malnourished prisoners of war--now displayed for all posterity as if they were living skeletons in a carnival sideshow--continue to evoke feelings of utter shock, profound sadness, and bitter regret." --from the Prologue, "Andersonville Revisited". Andersonville is remembered for several reasons, among them, the total of 12,912 Union prisoners and 250 Confederate guards who died there between February, 1864 and April, 1865. No other American POW camp received as much publicity as Andersonville, with the U.S. Department of War even circulating photographs of emaciated prisoners, which were reprinted in history texts. Seldom did there appear a mention of the fact that Union soldiers imprisoned there received the same medical care and rations as Confederate soldiers in the field. While there has been much written about Andersonville, this book presents seldom-seen documentation from Confederates familiar with the camp, as well as discussions by contemporary historians. This book is an effort to clarify the troubling questions that remain about the camp: How could this tragedy have happened? And who was to blame? fine. Book.…

Samuel Rutherford Crockett (1859-1914) was a prolific Scottish novelist. "The White Plumes of Navarre" is a historical novel set during the tumultuous period of the French Wars of Religion, focusing on the events leading up to the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572. The narrative intertwines the lives of significant historical figures such as Admiral Coligny and Duke of Guise with fictional characters, including the young protagonist John Stirling and Claire Agnew, as they navigate the treacherous landscape of faith, loyalty, and political intrigue. The book is bound in the original dark green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards. There are few light stains on the rear board. There is a small dent that has caused a little damage to the cloth near the bottom edge of the rear board and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with foxing to the fore edge of the text block, and on some pages the foxing has seeped a little way into the fore margin. There is no inscription. W.H.
