Jahrhundert gesammelt oder komponiert wurde, kontrastiert mit dem minimalen oder nicht vorhandenen Platz, der ihm in Werken der Literaturgeschichte und -theorie vorbehalten ist. Die wichtigsten Texte der Gattung sind selten in befriedigenden modernen Ausgaben veröffentlicht worden. Die spezifischen Studien, die diesem Bereich gewidmet sind, sind wenige, verstreut und bruchstückhaft geblieben: Es wurde kaum versucht, diese Produktion zu umreißen, ihre Typologie zu skizzieren, ihre Funktionen und ihre Ästhetik zu identifizieren, die Filiationen zu erkennen, aus denen sie stammt, und schließlich ihre wichtigsten Entwicklungen zwischen dem Mittelalter und dem klassischen Zeitalter zu erkennen. Unser Ziel war es wohl nicht, eine so immense Aufgabe zu bewältigen - Herculei labores! - aber, wenn schon nicht die Grundlagen zu legen, so doch zumindest seinen wissenschaftlichen Nutzen (und warum nicht auch sein Vergnügen?) aufzuzeigen: Ziel war es, ein erneutes Interesse an diesem einzigartigen Korpus zu wecken und einen Überblick über die wichtigsten literarischen, rhetorischen und anthropologischen Fragen zu geben, die es uns erlauben, es zu erforschen. / Contenu: De lAntiquité à lÀge classique, des textes toujours plus nombreux et variés se constituent par juxtaposition de brefs énoncés plus ou moins discontinus et supposés dignes de mémoire : adages, proverbes, sentences, aphorismes, apophtegmes, apologues., les uns issus, dit-on, dune tradition populaire immémoriale (« la sagesse des Nations »), les autres attribués avec plus ou moins de certitude et dexactitude à des auteurs anciens ou modernes. Le « genre », si tant est quil faille parler dun genre, est particulièrement prisé et fécond à la Renaissance. Le projet de ce volume part dun constat simple quoique troublant : limmensité du corpus gnomique rassemblé ou composé en Europe entre les xive et xvine siècles contraste avec la place minime voire inexistante que lui réservent les travaux dhistoire et de théorie littéraires. Les textes majeurs du genre nont que rarement connu des éditions modernes satisfaisantes. Les études spécifiques consacrées à ce champ sont demeurées peu nombreuses, dispersées et fragmentaires : on na guère tenté de baliser cette production, den esquisser une typologie, den dégager les fonctions et lesthétique, didentifier les filiations dont elle procède, enfin den discerner les évolutions majeures entre le Moyen Age et lAge classique. Notre objectif nétait sans doute pas de parachever une tâche aussi immense Herculei labores ! mais, sinon den jeter les bases, du moins den montrer lutilité scientifique (et pourquoi pas lagrément ?) : il sagissait de susciter du moins un regain dintérêt pour ce corpus à part et de donner un aperçu des principales problématiques littéraires, rhétoriques et anthropologiques qui permettent de lexplorer.
