The present study deals with the northern Solvidae and Stratiomyidae represented in the territories of Denmark and Fennoscandia, viz., Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Soviet part of eastern Fennoscandia. Both families apparently form a monophyletic group, generally called the superfamily Stratiomyioidea, which is characterized by a broad conformity in the larval morphology, presence of a compact prosternal bridge in the adults, absence of the costa on the posterior margin of the wings, and characteristically curved vein Cu1b connected with 1A before the wing-margin (Hennig, 1967). In the area treated here, the Stratiomyioidea are represented by 19 genera containing 50 species. The male terminalia are used extensively as taxonomic characters for each species and for this reason deserve special attention. Mature larvae and puparia, as far as they were available, are reexamined and their chaetotaxy in particular is studied in great detail. This paper also includes recent changes in nomenclature, the main information on diagnostic characters and variability of adults and immature stages, distribution data and biological notes. Keys have been provided for all adults and known larvae at the generic and specific levels. The distribution data discussed in the text and summarized in the appended tables are based on the examination and revision of extensive material deposited in the dipterological collections of Copenhagen, Bergen, Oslo, Lund, Stockholm, Göteborg and Helsinki as well as in some private collections. Most of the type specimens of the species described by J.C. Fabricius, C.F. Fallén, J.W. Zetterstedt, R.C. Stæger and R. Frey have been studied. Gadstrup. Scandinavian Science Press. 151 pp., 456 line drawings, paperback 8 [14.5 x 21 cm] [original edition with green cover].

This study is a monograph of the Sciomyzidae occurring in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland. A brief review of faunistic research in this area, a survey of the most important morphological terms used for adults and immature stages, and a comprehensive account of the bionomics and ecology of the species examined are given. The nordic species are analysed from the point-of-view of their zoogeographical affinities and are compared with the incidence of the other species in North and Central Europe. In all, 83 species in 22 genera have been reliably recorded from Fennoscandia and Denmark. All taxa are keyed and briefly characterised, and distribution, biological and taxonomic notes are given for each species. In addition to the external characters, the male genitalia have been examined in detail and are illustrated for virtually all the species studied (except for Antichaeta obliviosa End. where only females have been available). A number of photographs illustrate the wing-patterns typical of many species, and these can be used as additional diagnostic characters. Several species which may eventually be found in the area treated here are also included in the keys. A catalogue recording the distribution of the species in the different biogeographic provinces of Fennoscandia and Denmark is given in the format customary in the series Fauna Entomologica Scandinavica. The nordic Sciomyzidae contain the following zoogeographical elements: Holarctic (23 spp.), Palaearctic-Oriental (2 spp.), Palaearctic (4 spp.), West Palaearctic (1 sp.), Eurasian (25 spp.), Eurosiberian (4 spp.), European (21 spp.), and Boreal (3 spp.). Three new species (Colobaea nigroaristata Rozk., Pherbellia hackmani Rozk. and P. stylifera Rozk.), one new name, nine new synonyms, some additional taxonomic notes as well as species new to Norway and Finland discovered during preparatory studies for this monograph have already been published in the form of preliminary communications (Elberg & Rozko?nı, 1978; Greve & Rozko?nı, 1981; Rozko?nı, 1981a, 1981b, 1982,1984). In this volume Pherbellia griseicollis (Beck.) is recorded for the first time from Norway; Pherbellia stackelbergi Elb. and Limnia paludicola Elb. are recorded as new to Denmark and Sweden; Colobaea punctata (Lundb.), Pherbellia rozkosnyi Verb. and Tetanocera freyi Stack. are recorded for the first time from Sweden. Leiden. Brill. 224 pp., 639 b/w photos and b/w line drawings, br. gr. 8 [15.7 x 24 cm].

Volume 162 of Zoologica summarizes and updates all current information on morphology, taxonomy and distribution of the Central European Muscidae since Hennig s famous monograph on the Palaearctic species of this family published in 19551964 and today. The introductory part describes the family characteristics and reviews its systematics. Taxonomic and faunistic data from Central Europe (Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary) are reviewed and synthesized up to the present. Additional chapters deal with current knowledge of the morphology, development, biology and classification of European Muscidae. Identification keys are provided to enable identification of the families of the Calyptratae and the various categories of Central European Muscidae down to subfamily, genus and species. The review of species discusses all 406 regional species and presents information on their distinguishing features, their known geographic distribution, and their adult flight period. Almost one thousand figures on 54 plates depict all morphological features used in the keys and in the description of species characteristics. Special attention is paid to figures of the male and female terminalia as the most important species-specific criteria. Data of the geographic distribution of the Central European species are presented in an extensive table which includes their distribution in studied countries, their biogeographical classification, and geographical distribution outside of Europe. Manual of Central European Muscidae (Diptera) undisputedly represents a much needed reference work for researchers as well as students interested in evolution, phylogeny, morphology and identification of muscids. 219 pp., 54 plates, paperback folio [23 x 31cm].
