Volume I contains mainly verses by Alexander Pope: 'particularly' I Windsor Forest, II Essay on Criticism, III Rape of the Lock, IV Ode on St. Cecilia's Day, V Verses to the Memory of a Lady, VI To Mr Jervas, with Fresnoy's Art of Painting, VII To a Young Lady, with the Works of Voiture, and VIII Eloisa to Abelard. Volume II, Miscellaneous Poems, Translations and Imitations, contains works by a number of authors with the most significant being Dr. William King, Mr. Elisha Fenton, the Revd. Mr. Broome, the Revd. Mr. James Ward and the Reverend Mr. Archdeacon Danie. Volume II contains an index to the contents of both volumes. Both volumes are bound in contemporary full leather binding with five raised bands to the spine. The title and volume labels on the spine are lost although the volume numbers are blind stamped to the spine. The spines have chipping at the top and bottom and some edge cracking. The corners are bumped with some rubbing. Wale Family bookplate to the front pastedowns and the second volume has another family name, Lady Wale, to the front free endpaper. Browning around the edges of the endpapers. Creasing to the top corners of pages 37 to 62 in the first volume. Two sections of the text protrude a little from the rest of the text block in volume II. There is also some browning to the title pages and the frontispiece in Volume I which is a portrait of Pope and the pages are browned but are otherwise generally unmarked.

William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 died 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language, and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. George Steevens (May 10, 1736 January 22, 1800), was an English Shakespearean commentator.
