It is #2571 in Coleman's "BIBLIOGRAPHY OF KENTUCKY HISTORY", and the VERY SCARCE original was printed in 1926, by Standard Printing, in Louisville, Kentucky. The author was well versed to write about the Mountain folk of Kentucky, since he grew up in and around the Cumberland Mountains of the Eastern Highlands of Kentucky. There is a prior owner's name atop the first blank flyleaf, but otherwise the book is unmarked, and in NEAR FINE condition. No D.J. as issued.

Original boards. Condition: V.g. No Jacket. 8th edition. Publisher's green embossed cloth covers, bumped at corners, vol. 1 starting to split along edge of spine. Engraved frontispiece by Hinchliff after Vasari; no guard. Bookplate "ex libris Edwardus Evans". Roscoe, a Unitarian by faith, was not the obvious choice to write these biographies, yet the books were well received when first published and deservedly ran to many popular editions, of which this is an interesting example. Hard work in places (the author is not averse to reproducing lengthy quotations in the original Latin or Italian), but Roscoe's admiration for Lorenzo de' Medici shines through. Second Edition. 16mo; 31, 89, 34 pages, full calf, extra-gilt spine, covers and spine very rubbed, marbled endpapers Tansillo was a highly respected poet and sonnetteer by his contemporaries, and arguably a better lyrical poet than Petrarch himself. But, rather few of his writings appeared in his lifetime, and not a few of them were put on the Index Expurgatorius by Pope Pius IV. This text, LA BALIA, was translated from the Italian by William Roscoe, based in the iItalian edition edited by Giovanni Antonia Ranza: Ranza is credited with most of the "Notes" in the final section. Roscoe contributed an Introduction, a sonnet, and a closing poem, "Inscription". This bi-lingual edition has the texts on facing pages. The poem presents a good view of the customs and state of society at Italy in the 16th century. The handsome wood engravings: a title-page vignette, one before each canto, one at the head of the Inscription, and a small tailpiece afterwards, have by some been attributed to Thomas Bewick, but are more likely by Bewick's apprentice, Henry Hole.
